Superb write-up & photos on the speaker change!

The speaker wires are the least of your concern, take a closer look at the pictures, the speaker is attached in three mounting holes and the speaker hole isnt completely round, also the offset is made to make the speaker fit snug against the door panel grille.

Sure it is possible to fit aftermarkets but IMO it just isnt worth the effort when h/k is bolt on at a similar price.

Their service department also quoted $120 per door to replace the speakers. I'm still waiting for a quote from an independent mercedes shop in Antioch,CA.

I just spoke with Joe of allmercedes.com and asked if he can still lower the price considering we have a lot interested. He is considering lowering the price if he can have his source lower their price as well. Joe will let me know tomorrow morning.

I agree, MB of Lauderdale's price is the best so far, allmercedes.com can no longer lower their price. Place the order online as their price over the phone is higher.

Bad news, I got the rear speakers today and I was rather surpised as they need to be riveted from the INSIDE of the door module *sigh*

This means that almost everything in the rear door needs to be removed, door panel, window crank, maybe the window, outside door handle, lock mechanism, the works

Just snapped some pics, as you can see theres no way to mount the blind rivets from the front ..

I thought it would be easy to mount the rear speakers as the fronts only took like 20 mins, but I think replacing the rear sepakers will take a good 2 maybe 3 hours

So I guess labor charge of $350 for all 4 door speakers + tweeters ain't that bad if the rear are so complicated...

Correct, question is if your dealer knows how complicated the rear swap is?, there is no way to tell in the Benz systems, I found this out when I got the new speakers..

But then again, if you got a price they must stick to it right?

If I were you I'd get some 3M industrial grade double sided foam tape, replace that foam on the housing and stick them on. Any autobody supply store will have it - used mainly for trim and very strong.

Will never come off and save a huge headache. They already use lots of glue on cars and aircraft so it's no big deal.

Vic Viper,

Have you finished installing the rear speakers? If so how long did it really take to install?

No, havnt had time to do it yet, need to order some more blind rivets foor the door module as well.

Have done a little research and the window must be loosened from the crank, window needs to be secured in window frame, door lock must be removed, outside door handle needs to come off, cable harness needs to be unhooked from B pillar, and a sh_tload of rivets must be drilled out.

Taping a speaker?, nah, I think ill stick to the rivets.

Hi Vic,

Due to the price of the speakers here in the US, I just went around and checked what aftermarket speakers I can use.

I spoke to one audio shop and they listened to my GLK stock radio. They said that should be enough to drive after-market speakers. The speakers he recommended is the HERTZ HSK 165 ($345) plus install about average between $450-480. That seems to be an affordable option.

Can you give me your thoughts on this ?

Thanks,

wow..seems a lot of work for the rear door speakers..dunno if I will trust non MB tech to do the job..
I am still leaning toward HK speakers but would defintly hold back until vic had time to do his..

Really depends on the shop you go to. The shop I asked already did alot of Benz and BMW. They have a good reputation in our area. Plus, I am only planning Tweeters/Front doors speakers.

Front door plus tweeters should only take 1 hour tops, its a very easy job,
and considering aftermarket speakers like I said before I would prefer OE h/k over aftermarket any day of the week, h/k are a perfect fit, monted correctly they wont cause any rattles or similar, with aftermarket speakers adapters and whatnot needs to be built..

Thanks, Vic. I just noticed one reason why the audio is so crappy. The tweeters in the front door are missing. The wires and foam insert is there. I bought the vehicle last Thurs from a local MB dealer. They said it was a fleet vehicle used as a loaner for folks that were having their MBs serviced. The CARFAX report seemed to comfirm this. Anyway, do you know of any audio package (basic) that would include NO tweeters? Seems like they'd at least put a cheapie in there. I kinda think somebody needed the tweeters for another vehicle and scavanged them from this one.

This is a 2008 C300 3.0L V6. BTW, what does the 'W203' mean?

Thanks
