I bought the extended warranty for the additional 3 yr/25k miles (total bumper to bumper 7 yr/75k miles) for $3,590. By buying the warranty I was able to reduce my MB finance rate by 1% more.

I don't know if it's worth it. I plan to keep mine for a long time so I simply bought it for the peace of mind as I have a fully loaded car with lots of electronics.

I passed when I picked up my car last week. $3k+ for only and addtl 3yrs/25k miles is horrible IMO. I would've expected 5/50 for that price. You can usually purchase the extended warranty up-to the expiration of the factory warranty. Extended warranties are basically insurance. I like to see how my cars behave reliability wise before making the decision. Forums are the biggest help here. With the w204, so far I don't see any wide reports for major issues. In a year or two, when the w204 is a bit older, I'll re-visit.
Contrast that with my other car... a Volvo XC90 T6. It's a twin turbo car that has a tranny that never should've been mated to it. There were/are many owners who've had it replaced early/often. Mine ended up failing at 30k miles, so when the factory warranty was close to expiring, I didn't think twice about buying an extended one.

I think your thinking is correct. The reliability of the W204 is so good that I've decided to pass on the overpriced extended warranty, at least until near the end of the factory warranty. It's odd that MB now has a reliable model and yet they have raised the price of the warranty while shortening the length.

I bought the MB warranty for my 2001 C320 (as reliable as a five dollar atomic bomb) which DOUBLED the factory warranty for $1800 and when I traded the thing in on the C300 I got a $900 refund to boot.

As to your Volvo, there is one like yours on the Youtube cash-for-clunkers series of videos that they killed with the "mixture" and although the 9 year old car looked good (well, for a Volvo) a voice in the background was naming all the possible problems it could have and mentioned the transmission.

Outside of the transmission, the XC90 is a solid vehicle reliability wise. It's just that they rushed to get a higher hp/torque model to market in '04/'05. The twin turbo T6 model that I have is mated to a 4-speed tranny from the GM bin! Obviously has been proven to be too weak for this model. They dropped the T6 and went to the Yamaha V8 in '06 and up vehicles.

I went ahead and added the 3/25K to the car for us, it was only 2950$ ( a bit of haggling, NOT at purchase) and we tend to drive cards less than 10K a year. We'll see, 100% refundable up till trigger date, I figure I could double that money in 5 years, but I would rather get it now and have it.
