New Sport Steering Wheel Upgrade!!!
#76
Awesome, very helpful and very accomodating. They're basically going to try and replicate the SL 63 steering wheel, with birdseye on the top and bottom where the flat leather stitching is, with small wood inserts on the lower inside grips. Now to style a matching shifter...

OK So I'm about to send this wheel into production, and I've got one question remaining.. My palms get sweaty when I'm driving fast, what is better for that, perforated nappa or alcantara leather?

On Day 1, a fabric may feel good, but note there are maintenance and cleaning to keep it fresh and free of built-up sweat and body oils. Perforated leather has been around for a long time, with a very good history of comfort, "gripability", durability, and easy to clean. I also get sweaty hands and find the perfed leather quite satisfactory.

Alcantara is composed of 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane. It is this mixture of materials that gives Alcantara its increased durability and stain resistance. The appearance and tactile feel of the material is similar to that of suede, and it may be incorrectly identified as such, or as "Alcantara leather", on occasion.

Yeah, the price went up when I added woodgrain to the bottom. If you look at competitive pricing you can see that just leather is around the same price, and when they customize the bottom of the wheel their prices are from $1,200-$1,450 so it's definitely not overpriced at $890.

The Performance Products 3 spoke Sport wheel is installed. It took the great guys at MotorWerks about 10 minutes total, with about 4 for resetting the air bag codes after the dis- and reconnect. The OE airbag hub fits perfectly, as it should, as the new wheel has an OE core.
These photos may show the rim thickness better. I am 6'2" and have fairly long fingers, but only my middle finger just about reaches around to touch the base of my palm. The wheel feels great!!
BTW.......OE 3 spoke rim for sale!

The leather is smoother and feels "heftier" to my hand, but this is so subjective. Given the choice of the OE leather or this, I would have considered this leather applied to the original wheel an improvement, if that makes sense and helps.

it still needs a new airbag, right? my car is a C280 (your C300) with the 3-spoke paddleshifter steering wheel (I am referring to that nice SL class steering wheel)

The Performance Products 3 spoke wheel uses the original air bag. It looks like a C63, but is the same diameter as the original wheel, so the original air bag fits. The real C63 is about an inch less in diameter, so it also needs a new air bag, bringing that whole investment to about $1500. The new rim does not have paddle shifters.

bite the bullet
I was in the same spot trying to decide which way to go, oem or non oem, I finally bit the bullet and ordered an oem C63 wheel from ebay for my C350. Dealer installed it to the tune of $80 and now I am insanely happy.
Glad I made that choice. Now it feels goooood everytime I wrap my sweaty palms around that wheel. cheers...............

If double the $$$ doesn't make a difference, go for it! Paddles don't do much for me with a manual trans!

I think you need to tweak the codes for the new airbag or reset something, your dealer would be able to tell you, they check the integrity of the airbag electronically as well. I don't think its a diy affair.
cheers.
cheers.
