Is paypal safe for buys

I was just going to buy rims from a guy, and he wanted me to use paypal to transfer him money and then ship me the rims.

Can anyone tell me if it's safe, cuz I haven't used paypal before. Or which way are you guys using to make those kinda deals

Thanks

There are several threads on here in regards to failed paypal transactions. Ask if you can send him a USPS moneyorder and sent it with a requested signature receipt. That way if you are worried that he will skip you got him on a federal offense.

Where did you find the rims? eBay? Forum? Craigslist?

Worst comes to worst, you do a charge back through your credit card company. Paypal is on the buyers side 99.9% of the time though . .

How many posts have they made? How long have they been around? Do they make a positive contribution to the forum? Have they sold anything in the past? What was the response?

That should give you a good idea if they are a good and reliable seller.

He actually posted another FS thread prior on the same wheels that I ignored because of the join date and post count. I left him feedback so he could use it for future sales. I have sold several sets of wheels over the past several years and requested each buyer post feedback in that particular FS thread for future use.

Good luck.

+1. This is the best way to make purchases - great advice.

Paypal is fine if you're buying on eBay with a very reputable seller. If you're going to use paypal, make sure you read the agreement your accepting so that you will not be upset if a deal you partake in goes sour.

Use paypal. As far as a federal offense, I doubt the feds would pick up such a small one-time case. Ask me how I know.

In relation to sending money via Paypal or via Money order?

Anything over $2000 and the FEDs get involved . . if not then you're basically SOL.

Paypal is generally safe for most transactions. In most cases paypal will protect the buy unless the seller can show proof of delivered goods (delivery confirmation on all goods < $250, signature for > $250 ). If the seller does not deliver the products, you should be covered.

An alternative to paypal is ESCROW.com. They are a very well known website to handle transactions of goods. Escrow.com will hold the money until the goods are delivered and checked. Then release the money to the seller.

Hope this helps!

i've always used paypal WITH a CONFIRMED address from buyer and only shipped to the confirmed address unless the buyer has credible reputation from others who have sold to him.

could care less about seller since I always use credit card for paypal payment which even if paypal dispute doesn't work I can just contact my credit card company for fraudulent charges if I don't receive the items that I paid for.

The FEDS get involved when you issue them an order to get involved, not when you ask for their permission to get involved. You need to learn how to use public servants if you cannot get them to do what you want.

Paypal is great when you are dealing with people that have integrity. If you are not sure and want to be safe, USPS money order with signature is the way to go. Once it is signed for the other party enters into a contract. You can get the FEDS involved, the IRS, anybody you want and they will go collect the funds for you.

paypal is probably the safest most secure method of payment online. The seller cannot ship you faulty goods and even if he does, you can either do a chargeback on your credit card or open a claim through paypal. If the seller didnt ship the item within 7 days and get a signature upon delivery, you basically get your money back on the spot. Even when you open a claim through paypal, paypal takes the money out of the sellers account immediately until they come to a resolution. It is extremely difficult to screw someone over through paypal.

And if this doesnt help, Just simply call Paypal and ask them what this sellers verified rating is and whether or not this seller has a positive account or not. Paypal will not disclose information, however, they will direct you on whether or not to purchase from this seller as they know how many chargebacks a seller has incurred and how many issues/claims this seller has incurred. They will let you know whether or not this seller is on good terms or has a bad account standing.

PayPal is all about buyer protection, 0 seller protection, I just got charged back today for someone that wanted to return an item because his wife was upset that he spent too much money. He could've just return it and pay restocking fee instead he opened the package and claimed that it's not working and asking for full refund. PayPal does nothing but immediately hold your credit balance for nearly 2 months until they have the case resolved. No comment.

+1 - beware there are some escrow scams that ask you to send your login details and / or for you to use their login for depositing. I just about got snaged since I had never used escrow.com before - but after reading their process I wised up.

Paypal is great. %99 people are good sellers. Follow advice others have offered - all good.

Remember, if the deal sounds too good to be true it probably is in most cases. However, I was fortunate to get 4 new OE MB staggered 17s for my W204 for $35 each - normally I would have walked but I had the guys MB dealer wk tel #.

yeah. I've contacted paypal a few times and they've told me it's their policy to pretty much just automatically refund payment to buyer after confirmed return and then let wipe their hands clean thinking everyone is happy cause they're back to initial state. Totally screws seller as no matter what, buyer can test out and try stuff and make bogus claim if they don't like it for money back.

that said, it's great for buyers.
