I want to restore the shine...exhaust tips

Over time, my exhaust tips have lost their glimmer and shine. I was just curious as to what you all recommend to restore them to the best possible condition. They may never be new again but I'd like to get them as close as possible.

No matter how much I tried to polish our exhaust it can never shine like my friends C63.. I think our exhausts can't be shined at all..

edit,

We use the same cleaning product too, squatting down next to each other and tried it and our exhausts just doesn't shine up at all.

I have mine shining like a mirror. I clean them and then I use Mothers metal polish and my cordless Dremel tool with a polishing pad bit. Wipe again with a soft cloth.

Just did mine with a styeel wool pad (fine) and soap then dried and waxed them. They look original.

I saw this very operation demo-ed at a detail shop just last week on a very neglected Porsche 996. They used a very fine steel wool soaked in solvent which restored the tips to new condition. Took about one minute for each one.

the manual say something about this. but I think you can just use a regular metal polish, like you would use on a mailbox or chrome.

I haven't had to clean my exhaust tips yet, but on my Fujitsubo exhaust on my last car, I used P21S and it restored it to a clean shine. I followed it up with Mothers metal polish and it finished it up real nice.

I was wondering about the steel wool...was just concerned that it would scratch the metal, leave marks, etc. Having neglected to keep them shining has caused a buildup on the tips that I'm thinking will require some elbow grease...Steel wool sounds like the trick, just don't want to do any permanent damage.

Stainless steel can be coated with chrome. But stainless steel is not a type of chrome or vice versa.

Chrome is slang for Chromium. Chrome is a metal, but it is not useful as a solid, pure substance. Things are never made of solid chrome, what is really meant is that there is a thin layer of chrome, a plating of chrome, on the object usually being steel, but occasionally aluminum, brass, copper, plastic, or stainless steel.

You are correct, sir! When I re-read your earlier post, it seemed that it said steel can be chrome, when I think I should have understood it to mean steel can be chromeD!

X3 and 2012 C coming soon
I thought they were chromed stainless. If they are polished stainless, use neverdull. I have used fine steel wool in the past. You have to keep getting finer and finer cutting products (compound) and then polish or you will see the fine scratches under bright lights.
