Factory Air Filter
We just changed our factory air filter out in our C300. We opted to go with the factory filter instead of the an aftermarket performance filter. Just incase others are looking for the factory filter but don't want to pay for the Mercedes name...heres the info on the filter...
The Factory Filter is made by: Mann
Part Number is: C 3698
This filter is the exact same as the factory, except with out the Mercedes name.

That is available on amazon a 2 pack for $30.56.
I buy for about $40 the mercedes one just in case they complained, but I think you're right, it looks identical even has the same number on it.
Did you notice anything from the change?
I changed mine at like 18 months, 21,000 miles, and I thought right after I noticed it was a bit more on the go. Mine was quite dirty.

Some people on this thread have used the K&N Filter, but others avoid it because of the oil based nature of the K&Ns and stick with the OEM filters.
It won't improve performance unless your filter is already clogged with dirt.
