$465 For C350 Registration in California for 2010, OUCH! WTF
Take your total cost of living including all fees (insurance, registration, schooling, healthcare, housing, etc) and taxes (sales, property, etc) as a percentage of average california wage level and you'll see the ratio isn't as bad. Personal preference, but I'd much rather live in bright sunny weather and be able to drive my car on summer wheels year round than some areas experiencing extreme snow season.

my main beef is with the $150 increase from one year to the next, just aint right on principles...

As it is, California is bankrupt and needs the cash - this is a great way to do in USA since public transit is not a viable option for most.
I expect at some point the US will look to Canada and the innumerable "user fees" for basic gov't services and add on gov't "fees" under the guise of green tax, regulation admin etc (have many names for it) to products and services. They have deployed over the years so did not have to introduce "tax" increases but raised mucho $ on "pay to play" .
Another great tax for raising huge money are airport ticket taxes - i.e $200 on a 600 mile flight and up - plus "airport improvement fee" at $25 per flight.
The only thing thay have not done yet is charge us $25 to get a tax return form...LOL. Pretty soon everything will have a separate "carbon tax" in various countries

Run a business which gainfully employs others and you’ll really feel government’s onerous pinch.
rb23lb- you got off easy with your registration fee as it’s less than a day’s net for most here.

its about people in cali ticked they are getting robbed by the state and won't see any benefit out of where their extra registration dollars are going... its more about the year to year increase rather than the total amount due
Recently these @$$face b@$tards did this on both for me - my carpool lane ticket which was $484 became $780 because I received no first notification (just the "guess what? you're now late hahahah!" notice) and my registration had the almost exact same situation ($750something). I appealed both and lost both - I'm sure they hear the "I never received the notice!" line daily and are completely numb to it.
I declare shenanigans on the state of CA. This is straight-up
albeit a properly modified and eminently capable AMG. Hardly a “big baller.”
It’s telling about your character that you’ve felt the need to belittle me for busting my *** in order to provide for my family’s future while having already fully paid for our home in a decent SoCal community. Those members here with whom I’ve had the good fortune to personally make acquaintance can attest that I’m a man of relatively modest means and have a unpretentious demeanor. Point is I forfeit what seems more than my fair share of income to taxes without sniveling or pouting. Did California’s financial straits enter your consciousness only upon receiving the C’s DMV renewal notice? Perhaps another state -or country- will more fully facilitate the comfortable lifestyle with which you’ve apparently become accustomed?
Bemused that the “insane” $150 increase in your car tax has you blathering on with “OUCH!” and “WTF.” Adiós.
PS I was looking into picking up a 2005 CL65 and checked with the DMV to see what registration would be on it...............drum roll please....................$1,850/year!!!!
