The total energy value of E85 is lower than gasoline due to lower density & the product being partially oxidised. Poor fuel consumption is the result.

That's about right.
Now they have the 10% Ethanol BS in all gas!!! On my dads new e350 he cant get better than 23 or 24 on the highway thanks to the 10%!!! Thanks greedy corn farmers and stupid people trying to be green!

I have a 2011 C300 Sport 4matic automatic transmission my gas cap is yellow and the inside says E85 or Premium. I have not yet tried running e85 in it, if i do will i see power gains? Will it ruin my car? i'm gonna try soon and see what happens hopefully i can get some ponies out of this.

Now with E85 costing $2-3 less per gallon than 91 in California, I’m thinking the decreased fuel economy is outweighed by the cost per gallon.
I think I’ll switch over until this crazy spike in gas prices comes down.

I tried it. And it sucked that much to not make it worth it. Around here it’s 3.99/5.76 E85/Premium. That means I would need to do 16.12 mpg or greater for it to be worth it. Currently doing 17.9 mpg With a lot of freeway driving. It’s technically better, but not at the expense of fueling up more often. It’s bad enough with a 92mi commute everyday.

If you run your VIN on www.lastvin.com (www.datamb.com) and have feature code 929 ENGINE FOR ETHANOL FUEL E85 listed, your car can safely use E85. Otherwise, don't use it!

Ok so I’ve been using E85 for a couple weeks now. I’ve been getting around 350-380 miles out of a tank, where I would usually get around 380-410 miles out of a tank of premium. Worth it for now until the price for premium comes down to E85 price.

If your mileage has fallen only 8%, then you are doing really well. My experience has been closer to 20% to 30% reduction in mileage. Are you being accurate in your calculations. I would like to know the miles per gallon versus miles per tank.

From all the comments, E85 is not a fuel efficient as "normal" premium gasoline. Have you measured the mileage using both types of fuel?
I have a station that carries E85 nearby but have very rarely used it. Also, if you Google E85 you'll find articles that suggest that the actual percentage of ethanol can be less than 85%. But that's usually on sites that talk about racing.
