Fuchs 5W-40 Motor Oil

Does anyone know much about the Fuchs brand oil...especially how to properly pronounce it...

Anyhow, my local shop is now using Fuchs 5W-40 and say it is easily comparable to Mobile 1 but I have not been able to find any of the MB lubricant charts showing it is truly 229.5 rated. Since it is generally pretty warm in Atlanta, I am not too worried about moving from 0W-40 to 5W-40 but would like to make sure it is MB approved and quality stuff.

It's pronounced as it's spelt with a gutteral gg for the "ch". It does not rime with f--ck.

See my latest approved products posting at the end of the thread.

Do they ever update that list, I notice walmart (US) selling some new shell synthetics, but none are 229.5s it seems.

Glyn,
It looks like the 229.5 list is a good bit longer in Europe than in the States. The Fuchs is on the Euro list but not the US list. Would using a Euro only approved oil in the US potentially void the warranty? Seems kinda strange but I don't want to end up with any issues.

The Benz approvals listing is updated regularly. I get the oil company updates & what is published on the extranet is updated at the same time as the industry gets it.

C300 - you must check exactly which formulation is being sold in the USA and if Fuchs claim 229.5 for it. Manfred Fuchs runs a tight ship & they are a highly reputable company.

Benz approvals rules state that the product nomenclature should be consistent & unambiguous globally. We all know that this does not work too well and there are many Mobil 1's as an example that are not approved so you have to read the fine print AND check the viscosity that gained the approval because of HTHS.

So check with Fuchs or your dealer that what you are getting is in fact the euro formulation as you have to do with Mobil 1 0W-40.

The Benz approvals are global with the address being given for the company office that submitted the oil samples & paid the bill for approvals testing. eg. we submit our samples via our european technology centre in Ghent - Belgium for our worldwide operations.

So I'm afraid that you have to do the homework & ask some questions. Some US marketers persist in selling oils with similar names that ignore european requirements because it is cheaper to formulate that way. One call to the Fuchs' technical desk should answer your question.

I will stop by and check out the actual product today.
Will the case/bottle acutally be labled as 229.5 or will I have to note the exact product name and weight and refer back to the list?

The bottle should be labled but if not then refer back to the list & ask the question of Fuchs.
