Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the suspension stiffens up aside from sharper throttle response and letting the engine run at higher RPMs between gear shifts. I expect that to increase gas consumption.

even in "S" mode, I find that the throttle response and gear downshifting (7AT) is much slower than in my previous car, a BMW E46 330i. Really need to stand on the acceleration pedal before it gets more hyperactive. I got used to it now, but it was a bit frustrating in the beginning.
