From the owner's manual :

Never change the program mode when the
gear selector lever is out of park position P. This
could result in a change of driving characteristics
for which you may not be prepared

Select C for comfort driving:

- The vehicle starts out in second
gear (both forward and reverse) for
gentler starts. This does not apply if
full throttle is applied or gear
range 1 is selected.

- Traction and driving stability are
improved on icy roads.

- Upshifts occur earlier even when
you give more gas. The engine then
operates at lower rpms and the
wheels are less likely to spin.

Select S for standard driving:

- The vehicle starts out in first gear.

- Upshifts occur later

( notice - no mention of the car not shifting into 7th in the C setting ! )

I have heard of this before. It is kind of like a smoother reverse gear to match the feel of taking off in C.

Its hard to explain, but this is not the first time I've heard that these trannys had 2 reverse gears (heard about it way back when I had my w209.

More warranty claims = less money for Dieter
The default to "C" allows MB to conduct fuel economy testing in Comfort mode (which will be renamed to "E" for Economy), thus achieving better ratings.

NOW THAT MENTION IT IS TRUE... when the car is in "R" reverse is aggresive, like as if the car had the E-brake on....

Doesn't mention anything about damage, does it. It's suggesting that some drivers are such doofuses that any little jerk or unrecognized shift wil cause panic in the streets.

I drive with it on C, mainly because I am a mpg freak. Sometimes, on the highway I will switch it to S as I feel like I am lugging the car when passing in C. Passing in comfort mode reminds me of passing in my old e320 sedan.

Don`t take this wrong, I don`t know by your post whether you think I`m right or wrong but Page 110 of the owners manual [ 2009 ] says: You should only change the program mode [ ie c & s ] when the automatic transmission is in Park P

I'm pretty certain there can't be much harm in changing the 'logic' behind a transmission. Changing the setting and causing it to drop or go up a gear won't damage a transmission.

What COULD happen is that there may be such sudden changes in the driving characteristics of the car that it would alarm the person and cause a human error resulting in damage.

Stop yelling.

The other reverse ratio is higher so as to improve traction in slippery conditions. Just like the second gear start in C mode.

Asked and answered. Scroll down a bit.

Just yesterday while puttering along about 25mph, I repeatedly switched S to C and back multiple times. No effect.
