C300 engine noisy above 5k rpm

I was stretching the legs on fiancee's C300 today, letting it get close to red line. The engine sounds really loud at such rpm speeds... quite uncomfortable, really. Is this your impression, too? Seems like it doesn't like to be revved up this high.

I'm comparing it to my 530i which actually sounds pretty nice and not uncomfortable at such high rpms.

I agree that the 3.0 can get a little course at higher RPM but nothing I would ever consider uncomfortable. It may be that the BMWs inline 6 has gotten you accustomed to the inherent smoothness of an I6 and any V6 will feel rough in comparison.

I used to have a BMW 6 cylinder and I loved revving it up to max. It just sounded so good and smooth. My Benz C280 surely doesn't compare in smoothness. It surely is loud but its not loud enough for me to consider it uncomfortable. One thing I love about my Benz is more power comes in earlier in the RPM range, unlike the BMW where I need to rev the pants off the car in order to get any power out of it.

the 3.5L engine sure sounds real good when it's above 5k rpm.
