FREE COMAND MAP UPDATES

The current issue of Mercedes Enthusiast (from the UK, read it at Barnes & Noble) reports that MB will provide free Comand map updates for the next three years in the UK and 38 other countries.

The burning question might be, is the US one of the 38 countries? Since MBUSA has been selling this data for a mere $249 per update, will they participate in the program? As one who has spent the money to update my Comand, I am gritting my teeth.

There are no group buys going on, that would be illegal.

Why would this be illegal? It has been purchased, now if you were talking about a copy of the original discs then I could see your point.

my interpretation is that one person bought it, and while continuing to make use of it, is allowing others to use it as well. Whether by sale, lease or gift matters not.

If the disk in question is a tool, like a hammer or screwdriver, that is used to complete some finite task and then set aside, then I have no problem with "sharing". An MB mechanic would legally be doing what these forum members are doing.

If the disk in question is an application disk that needs to be present in the drive for the application to function, like a game disk or (wait for it...) a navigation disk (), then this sharing equates to piracy.

You are so far out in left field that I can hardly see you. The nav update disk is not licensed to anybody and does not remain in the drive after it's contents are downloaded. If you owned a W204 with Multimedia, you would know this.

Copying it's contents and offering it to all and sundry might be another matter.

You sound like a Microsofter.

Seems like I'm right on target, not "out in left field"

Who said I own a w204? I own an S55, like it says in my user information to the left (next to "Drives:"), at the request of the moderators when I signed up. Sorry you missed it (how??). I humbly apologize for tainting your mighty W204 thread with my posts.

Actually I sound like someone concerned with avoiding software piracy. I'm a software engineer, and I sure as ***** don't like giving away work for free. And no I don't work for Microsoft, I work for one of the "Big" accounting firms.

I won't comment on what you sound like.

edit: i forgot to thank you for clearing up how the disk is used.

To get back on topic, there is a reported problem with the operation of the Comand APS system in the w/S 212 E class in Europe. The problem is mainly in the UK with the original mapping discs issued when the 212 was launched last year which were woefully out of date - the maps themselves contained some incorrect routing information and the POI (hotels, restaurants, etc) were both inaccurate and incomplete. For example the restaurant information contained only fast food places (McDonalds, Burger King etc.) Mercedes have already corrected some of these problems and are offering 3 years free updates in the UK, mainland Europe and some other countries to try and appease owners. Two major updates have been issued this year but unfortunately in some respects the information is worse than before. To take as an example restaurants again, most of the fast food places have gone but have been replaced by lists of catering companies, engineering companies, fish and chip shops and indian/chinese takeaways. There is also a serious issue with some of the on-screen presentation and voice prompts which place the driver in the wrong lanes at some junctions which then involve making potentially dangerous manoeveres. Some of the so called "quickest routes" to destinations are far from the quickest routes.

I am not sure what other countries outside Europe are affected - I dont think the problem exists in the US and I should stress that this problem now only affects E classes fitted with the NTG4-W212 Comand APS system.
