What are these?

So this is what my shop took out instead of my resonator. These are between the resonator and the engine. My question is what are they? And if I decide to go with an Eisenmann exhaust will these be replaced anyway or will they have to be welded back in?

This could be your catalytic converters. If you are in a state that requires yearly inspection, you need to put them back on

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Next question is....do they have to go a certain direction? Or is either way fine?

Your shop should put them back on free. In Florida, it's illegal for a place of business (muffler shop, dealer, etc.), to remove them...

dude, don't take this the wrong way...don't mean to sound insulting although it'll probably come across that way...but WOW.

in general, not to specifically call out the OP, i feel people that don't understand the basic principles of what they are doing/deleting/adding/modifying, probably shouldn't be doing it. an exhaust system is about as basic as it gets.

this is indeed a car forum and ppl come here for advice, to learn, to share and make friends that enjoy the same things but to have to ask what those are...or just leaving the shop without knowing confuses me.

i understand we all can't be car guru's...I do all my own work minus welding and tuning but i'm no master mechanic. that being said, i understand exactly what i'm doing when i go to do the job. its just unsafe otherwise. if i were to disassemble the suspension to replace something as simple as say, springs and i didn't understand what i was doing, even to the slightest degree, it would be catastrophic for me, the car and anyone else on the road.

it also probably means that the shop that you chose to do this work shouldn't be in business. what did they replace that section with? just straight pipes? i'm curious how the convo went. what happened, they took your money, gave you that box, your keys and sent you on your way? what did they do with the x-pipe?

again, don't mean sound condescending, i certainly am no know it all, there is much i can learn about even the basic functions of some of the car's components...i learn stuff on this forum all the time...mostly from the AMG guys but that is the nature of the beast... however, i do prepare myself for what i'm getting into. granted getting an x-pipe welded on isn't like setting up duel nos runners but its a job non the less. I wouldn't walk in or out of a shop without know exactly what i was doing, was confident they knew what they were doing and was getting exactly what i was paying for.

i hope they don't just clamp those back on for you.

after rereading my post i do sound like a know it all d*ck and didn't even answer your questions.

your new exhaust, assuming its a full set up, shouldn't need those. cats back will.

it does matter the direction they are welded back on, the pic is tough to see so i can't be more specific.

if they don't do a phenomenal job welding those together, if there are leaks or spikes in the weld it will affect air flow and get the ecu inaccurate readings.

not the end of the world. ppl pull them out all the time...you probably gained a half a HP or so but as was previously mentioned, most states will require them for emissions.

hope that is more helpful...good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, I did notice more power to tell you the truth. Here is what happen just so you know though.

First all the shop is phenomenal and they have done all my custom work on 3 cars. I left the car over night and they did a number of things. Before I left I said I want the resonator (single) removed and the xpipe put in its place. When I showed up to pick it up, they were closing and said everything is in the trunk. I got home opened the box and pretty much was like wtf. That does not look like a resonator...further more I didn't think I had two resonators. Thought they were the cats but one thing I never do is exhaust mods because I don't like loud cars. But coming from a G35, something was just missing so this was my first attempt.

I have no idea why a shop would put an xpipe in place of cats but there it is, it happened.

As far as the convo goes, they told me bring it back, we will get you a rental car if you need it and we will fix it.

fair enough...reasonable explanation and if you've have a lot of success with them in the past...well, mistakes do happen...this is just a real odd one.

i'm sure they'll make it right...and if you replace the whole thing anyway the point in moot.

i'm not sure i'd want to pay for this mistake tho. they should eat the labor cost...but that is your call.
