white and whiter
Frank, why you quotin' me man? I'm not talking about the filter itself...just location. I've got K&N drop in's. I never disputed the airflow thing you guys were talking about earlier. I'm talking about heat soak problems only.
I know and wasn't arguing that the factory box is pretty close to perfect. the K&Ns or BMCs slightly improve flow.

oh yea, as for heat soak, I agree. it's always better to have heat shield to cover any sort of open filters.

what if you were to cut a slit or 2 right over where the filters would be and mesh them out? on the front of the hood tho, not more on the top like the c63 amg hoods that someone posted links for (which i deffffff wanna get btw lol) i feel like that could be custom fabricated and make it semi discrete at the same time so it would looks super rice, it would look like ti actually serves a purpose. im drawing up some ideas now because im getting a carbon fiber hod for my w203, and i want to custom fabricate it so heat soak is no longer an issue at all, but at the same time try to keep it as classy as possible. nobody wants to turn a mercedes to a rice rocket with big spoilers and mongoose hood scoops... its just not right IMO.

I can't believe we still have threads like this. I'm going to break it down very elementary and pray that whatever is not being understood might click. You don't need a thermometer to know this filter pulls hot air. You can't fix it with heat shields.
The cone pulls air from 360 degrees right? So at least the bottom 180 degrees of that is air from below the stock air intake, right? Which means it's pulling from the other side of that giant radiator right? The radiator is a heat exchanger, meaning it takes boiling hot coolant from the engine block, and runs it through those fins to exchange their heat with the air surrounding the fins right? The grill passes cold air from in front of the car across those fins to displace the warm air surrounding the radiator fins right? Remember how we put that filter which "increases air flow" so that half of that air came from directly behind the radiator? So at least half of the air these cone filters are sucking up is superheated air vented off the radiator.. right?
Heat shielding blocks infrared heat transfer, it can not block normal convection heat transfer. Hot air will heat the cones, and what heat doesn't transfer to the cones will be sent to the engine.

Specter performance in red , there are aftermarket exhaust applications for the w204 other than k&n filters for your air box . These cone filters fit just fine though it's a homemade mod but it's the only way to do it really .
