Speed Bump Dilemma
My usual route out of the neighborhood has a few fresh new speed “humps”. I really don’t mind the really smooth ones, but these seem just a bit rough around the edges. After a bit of trial and error, I have learned that with these big wide humps I either need to be under about 12-13 MPH or between 23-27 MPH to take them smoothly.
I guess my dilemma is what speed is best for the car? Although it feels pretty smooth at 25 MPH, it seems like there is a lot of force to be dealt with by my suspension. Likewise, I hate speeding up and slowing down so many times. For what ever reason, things just feel really rough in between those speeds, which is the speed I usually take the big speed humps.
Anyhow, just curious as to everyone’s view on how much wear and tear may be happening at the higher speed even if the car seems to be handling it well.

The 12-13 sounds better to me, and I would try to cross at some angle, so both front wheels don't hit the upward side at the same moment. This goes beyond suspension...every impact gets you a step closer to interior squeaks and rattles.

I have to go through 6 of them just to get out of my garage
and they are the worse kind which going 6mph still feels rough...

Aw crap, I didn't even think of that...thanks Jim...![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Thanks for the replies guys. I have pretty well decided to take it easy and relax and now have mostly been taking them at about 10 MPH (good rolling speed in second) but it will take a bit of time getting used to it. I am hopping these smooth out like many of the other humps in the area and seeing as the slopes are made of fresh ashphalt, they may be a bit less aggressive on the leading edges soon.
I have only had a couple of spastic drivers behind me so far as most people seem to want to preserve their cars. It's funny but the stereotype of the soccor mom, in her SUV on the phone seems to be the ones that want to give me a launch over each hump. If they would hang up and pay attention, you would think they would realize I am going to go slowly over each bump. Since I use engine braking in between humps, I am afraid I may be posting soon about how some distracted driver has launched me over a speed hump and I will be trying to decide on my new diffuser....looking on the bright side I guess...
