Is the 2008 C300 battery maintenance free?
I pulled the cabin air intake to check the battery but it looks like there is no way to check the electrolyte level.
The battery is not totally sealed as there is a vent off the top side along the fender. The way the battery is constructed, it's hard to tell if the top plates are removable. I don't want to start prying on these plates and then find that I broke some seal and screwed up the battery.
Does any one know if the top plates are removable, and that the battery is serviceable?

Not sure. I think I've read before it is maintenance free, but don't 100 percent quote me.
I wouldn't worry about it. Many just keep it until the color indicator changes, the dealer says it has went bad, or it starts causing you trouble. Of course, I know a battery often goes out at the worst time possible, so sometimes it's nice to plan ahead and avoid it.
Good luck.

I haven't had any issues...nearing 40k miles and I drive this kid everyday with no issues. Have yet to run into a battery issue.
Also, if you have an issue, just take it to the dealer and complain about it; they'll replace it free of charge under 50,000 miles.

My battery is a Varta , Made in Germany , 70 amp /Hour -760 AEN what ever that means.
It is marked as a VRLA Battery - do not open. Therefore is maintenance free .
From Wikipedia,
A sealed lead-acid batteryA VRLA battery (valve-regulated lead-acid battery) is the designation for low-maintenance lead-acid rechargeable batteries. Because of their construction, VRLA batteries do not require regular addition of water to the cells.[1] VRLA batteries are commonly further classified as:
Absorbed glass mat battery
Gel battery (gel cell)
