Please Help the People of Japan!
Let's share some of our good fortune with people in the middle of life-threatening shock and horror. Put off even just one mod for a while and help the Red Cross help the people in Japan. Thanks!

The catastrophic chain of events that shook Japan is truly tragic to say the least.
The American Red Cross is presently taking a minimum of $10 which will be used to support relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
Let's do our part... Sign up and donate

Can anyone recommend a good "Text Service" number to donate to (Text, and the price comes out of your Phone Bill) as well. Sending to the right charity in this scenario is paramount.

I'd recommend the Red Cross. I don't know how efficient/effective they are but at least you know its going in the right direction.

If only life were that simple. Sending positive to Japan is certainly a good and positive gesture, but they could surely use tangible help.

"Those who want to help can go to www.redcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific."
There seems to be no limit on how many such texts you can make for amounts greater than $10, if you don't want to contribute through their web site link.

What really scares me is how much radiation they're getting dosed with. If you know anyone over there, tell them to get the fudge away from those power plants as they can for the time being, it's nasty stuff and some of readings I've seen so far are pretty scary (I've dealt with radioactivity at work).

This is so tragic. 1 of my dream vacations was planned around going to Japan next spring to live for a month. Looking at pictures and videos it gives me the urge to fly out and just pitch in with what I can. I feel like money helps but I'd like to do more with my own hands. Rebuild a house, supply food/water to those who lost everything and those working hard to help the others, help rummage through the damages...anything!
Please everyone lend a helping hand. I'm sure we can hold off on w/e mods we had planned for a small donation to potentially save a life.
Thanks Sportstick for making the thread. Glad to see people pitching in and doing what they can.

The Fukushima Daiichi may fully meltdown, making this a terrible 1 (eq), 2 (tsunami), 3 (radiation release) punch. Japan is the most loyal US ally next to the UK - and we need to help our brothers.
Any donation helps, even if it's just a few bucks.

Thanks for the Text #. Donated.
Agreed. It's really scary stuff. I'm paranoid about it coming to us as well, in case of a major nuclear disaster out there, especially the West Coast.
My hearts out there with Japan. MAJOR respect to that extremely disciplined and well rounded overall culture. There isn't a culture that I'd trust more-so than the Japanese in pulling through something this catastrophic.

It's great that you guys are kicking in...just imagine, in addition to everything that has happened in Japan, they are now getting freezing rain and snow. Many have no food, no shelter, and not even blankets, according to the morning news! The need for help continues!

This is just so sad. These people just can't catch a break... I've already texted my donation, and urged others to do the same. But I can't imagine that it would be enough... Also, I learned that texting donations is not always the best idea. It takes up to 90 days for the selected charity to recieve the donation.
Here is a list of organizations that HAVE previously been assisting Japan, and are rated in the amount of impact that they will have:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...view&cpid=1221
I have personally donated to:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...ary&orgid=3626
They take a VERY small amount for administrative purposes, unlike others who take upwards of 10% of your donation. They are also located in Santa Barbara, CA.

I will be carefully choosing a charity for the relief effort. This tragedy will affect everyone in the world so we must do all we can to help. Thanks for starting the thread Sportstick.

I had put up a donation box($) at the urgent care center where I work which all of the proceeds will be used to help relief efforts in Japan... One of my colleagues who is an orthopedic surgeon commit that he will triple whatever amount we collect by the end of the week
Keep those donations coming... People who were stripped of their love ones, homes/ shelter and security have suffered enough
