Hello All,

I recently ordered my 2011 C300 Sport and am excited to be a part of this forum. Was wondering if anyone on here is from the DMV and has input on how strict Virginia cops are with tints?

I'm in Va and my friend got his Mini with Va plates tinted in Texas. He has 15% on his rear and 40% on his side windows.

He's never had any issues with cops. He's only had it for a year though.

I live in the DMV area and I have noticed in a few cities i have lived in that it generally bites you in the butt if you have say a white car with illegal black tint, because it stands out more against the white paint while on a black car its harder to tell. With that said I have illegal tints I forget the % I think its first level of Limo tint on all windows, no tints on the windshield because well anyone in the DMV knows they don't believe in street lights on the GW Parkway and other streets and so it will be difficult to see haha! I have been pulled over for a few speeding tickets and no cop has ever talked to me about my tints. Hope that helps!

hey guys thanks for the info.

I've ordered mine in black 6-speed stick, roof and rear spoiler and upgraded sound from factory. I know in VA code is 50% tints in the front (ridiculous) and 35% in back, I am thinking of trying 20-25% for front and back.

Do you have any experience with tickets for out of state tags? Apparently cops will spot check garages for condo and apartment buildings around Arlington and go after those w.o VA plates.

Well, I have Florida Plates since I am originally from Miami, Fl, with a Florida Drivers license.

The cops that have pulled me over ask whats that about and I just say I maintain my residence in Florida, they don't ever follow it up with anything.

Funny my GF lives in an apt community has a 2011 BMW 335 w/ Virgina Plates and got a ticket for inproper sticker not registered with county. But my car never gets ticketed with Florida plates.

I dont' know if the cops were just being really strict one month, but I got pulled over 5 times for tints in one month. I had 10% tint. THose guys actually brought out the tool that measures the tint percentage. And to top it off, I told them I have maryland plates, and they still gave me a ticket telling me that 10% is not legal anywhere. I got so sick of it that I just took the tints off and ever since then I haven't been bothered by the cops. Yea it looks nice, but if it gives me less of an excuse to be pulled over, I'm ok being tintless.

wow that is rough. MD cops are much nicer regarding tint and treat it as a secondary issue as far as I can tell (meaning if you are speeding for example they will pull you over and get you for tints as well, but usually not pull you over for tints alone).

I think MD law is 35% all around, and VA law says regardless of your tags tint has to conform to VA standards on VA roads.

Perfectly reasonable solution. When one knowingly and blatantly breaks the law, one doesn't get to act indignant when it draws cop attention.

I'm not saying don't get your car tinted. I'm just saying be reasonable about it if you don't want the wrong kind of attention. Driving 5-10mph over the speed limit on an interstate is one thing; driving 75mph through a school zone is quite another. Tint is not that different. If you're going to break the law, at least be subtle about it.

lol agreed. i like the privacy of tint though especially around here...i feel people mean mug at stoplights/on the roads in the East Coast a lot more than other parts of the country for no good reason

I live in the DMV area and have 20% percent on the front and back and have not gotten any tickets for it.

welcome welcome! shall see u on the road =P if u have VA plates... you better do the legal tint % or else they will ticket you and cut up ur tints .... i got 30% all around but i'm in MD, so VA cops can't do anything about my tints and MD cops doesn't really care about it.
