DIY: Temporary front license plate install for fix-it ticket
Hi all,
I got a ticket for no front plate while parked in San Francisco the other day ($105). If you get this corrected, it's $10. After looking around at weird products that use the front tow hook (so you don't have to drill your bumper) and cost $80, I just did the following:
1) Bought this Cruiser Accessories license plate mount for $6 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00032K4TW
2) Bought these zip ties from Amazon for $8, could have gotten shorter ones for cheaper but I wanted to makes sure they were long enough to manipulate through the grille http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002J2R2I
3) zip tied the plate mount to the grille (see pic 1 below)
4) simply screw plate onto the mount with the screws that come with the mount
Upon inspection, it looks as if the plate is permanently mounted to the grill by the screws. No zip ties in sight. When you're fix-it ticket is cleared, simply unscrew then cut off the zip ties.
And I didn't just use zip ties or velcro flat out because neither fly any more in CA. I saw most of this idea from some corvette forum but wanted to share this with you guys.

The law has change in California
The first offence is a fix a ticket + court fee and certificate of correction total $35.00
Second offence is $140.00 and goes on and on.

I never had a front plate on my c230 cause it didn't have a bracket and I wasn't drilling into my bumper. I tried the grille fix but my grille eventually bent/fell out so be careful with that, I only did it to pass inspection lol. After that I took it off and never got bothered about it once while getting pulled over for my tints or speeding =]. The hideaway plate thing is sick, I'd just be worried about loosing it after hitting a nasty bump, and I don't see any decent ones for the back.
