What is "+" mean in +40 offset?

UPS just delivered my E63 reps from one of our forum sponsor. I look at the boxes and the front is 8.5 +40 and the rear is 9.5 +44. What is "+" really mean?

They told me the offset of the wheels are 45 front and rear both in PM and also the time when I ordered. I am now a bit concerned do they fit (not stick out) on my wife's C300. Anyone has ET40 with 8.5 in the front?

Anyone can give me some insight on this? TIA.
Does this help?

it means the bolting face of the hub/wheel is 40 milimeters past (to the outside) of the center of the rim.

So... Is "+40" the same as "40" offset? or is it different? Sorry for the noob question. Still concern about do the wheels fit....

^They pretty much explained it. Do post pics of your rims when installed! The offset on the fronts are slightly more aggressive than what you might want, but it should be fine.

Just out of curiosity, who did you get the E63 reps off of? (and are they the newer E63 reps that resemble those on the W212 or the older ones on the W211?) I've been looking for a set of the W211 ones, but have yet to find anyone that has them in the right size/fitment/offset. :/

thats fine for the offset. That means the front and backs will be even to eachother on stickout. Basically the offset would be different if both wheels were 8.5, but the fact the back is 9.5 its gonna stick out a little more than front cause its an inch wider which if you cut in half make a half inch is 12mm I beleive, or maybe 14, either way 4mm of that will suck back in so you'll have roughly 1/4" or so further out on back, its the look you want with staggered setup.

If you look in the buying guide at a Benz dealer you will see there are 3 different setups for C class (non-amg) and they all have different offsets, as high as 58mm for a 8.5 on the rear. Im running 8.5 with 40mm up front and 10" rears with 40mm out back. They clear fine.....I cleared teh last car with 8.5 up front on a 38mm offset no problem

There has been a set of 2007 W211 E55 wheels and tires on Seattle Craigslist for quite a while. They appear unmarked and the price is $1995.

I just called the bodyshop and will have a test fit tomorrow.

I bought the set from a forum sponsor and I am start questioning about their honesty. Anyway, if the wheel offsets work, it is no big deal but if otherwise, I will be pissed since my wife's car is in the body shop right now and we need these wheels to replaced the one damage OEM.

The fronts will look great. The rear might poke a little more then you would like. Post pics of them on. I would like to see that offset on the car.

I called Luke from Tire Rack and he told me I may need to roll my fender for the front and the rear should be fine. I actually ordered 18x8.5 ET45 front and rear and the store sent me something totally different.....

I also need to exchange my tires from Tire Rack since I ordered 235/40/18 for around. Now the rear needs 255/35/18. It will cost me about additional $70 on shipping charge both ways. Not so happy about the store right now.
