How would you test the rear suspension?

About 6 weeks ago, I ran over a severe dip in the road and my car hasn't driven the same since.

It now feels like the rear end has an extra bobble in it when I go over bumps.

Does anyone know how to test the rear shocks or is it more likely that something else got damaged????

take the wheels off and look for oil on the shock.

Also look at the shock mounts & rubbers for damage.

I tore one completely off one time on a rough road.

I tore a rear sway bar link in my previous C, some kinda symptom. The car felt boundy in the right rear, the next day I put it on the lift and pulled the drivers rear and saw it bent and hanging. If your under warranty just take it in, or if you have access to a lift or some tools pull the rear tires and compare the assembly on each side. If you dont know what your looking at its kinda tough, at least if you pull both sides you can compare the 2

I went by an independent foreign car shop to see if they could at least tell me what it was.

They were overloaded with work in progress and couldn't really take a look at it today. Suggested that I come in tomorrow at 9.

When I asked about bouncing the car, he said that it varies with the model car too much to use that method. When I asked about pulling a wheel and checking for oil leakage on the shock, he said that it might be that the top something (cap???) on the shock that pulled loose.

I think I'll just go by in the morning and see what they come up with. As hard a bounce that I had that started this, I wouldn't be surprised if the rear alignment is also screwed up. I'll probably go to the MB dealership for that.

What's funny is that from day 1, I thought this car road too stiff. Now that its bouncy, its actually a little quieter and not as rough riding. Certainly I have to get what's broken fixed, but I don't miss the firm ride for a second. I do miss it having that large heavy feel.

Jim,

It was a previous car,a Leyland P76! not the C. In fact one shock mount was broken & the other shock had elongated to the extent that it had broken the shaft leaving the rear end with no dampening at all.

On the way to town to buy a new set the ride was very floaty & unsafe . It was embarrassing stopping at at the traffic lights because the car continued to bounce quite strongly for quite a time after stopping which attracted some attention & amusement from other travellers

I hope it is a minor fix for you , just new shocks & no other damage. Keep us informed.

Just a thought , as you are looking for a more compliant ride it may be worthwhile choosing a shock which has less dampening that the OEM.

That turned out to be a huge waste of time.

Lift was not available and he started to do a bounce test putting pressure on one of the front headlights. I did catch him before he broke it.

I think I'm going to want to take a good look at it before letting any of these people loose on it. Too bad I don't live in an area where there is an independant garage that you can trust.
