c300 engine noise update
Hello,
I wanted to post update on engine noise at start up. Took car back to dealer 2 times and they could not replicate sound. I took the car home and recorded the sound 3 different times on my phone in the span of 2 days. I called dealer and brought it back and played it for them. The shop foreman heard the noise I have been telling him about. They have the car and he said that the first thing they are going to try is a new tensioner and chain. He said that he hasn't heard that sound on any other car but he did hear my car do it. After that, he said if problem still exists they would contact MB to see what they want them to do as far as tearing into engine to solve problem. I'll keep you updated.

Upload it onto youtube. I am pretty sure that in another thread this startup issue has been covered and deemed as "normal" by MBUSA. Its just a by-product of a poor design by Mercedes. It isn't harmful to the engine at all, but there is a "retrofit" fix. I believe it was to install something bigger to allow more oil. The knocking sound at startup is related to the oil pressure being low. I am not really 100% sure of what the issue is, as I'm no mechanic, but a simple search will reveal the answer from people more savy than I.

If its a quick knocking during the first 2-3 seconds of start-up its caused from low oil pressure. As stated above its a normal sound says mercedes and will not cause engine damage, just annoying. The fix is to install one size bigger main bearngs.

Having trouble posting video. Car is still at dealer and have had a Mercedes loaner with same engine for over a week now and this car starts fine every time with no noise whatsoever. Shop foreman said sound is not normal and he did hear the noise several times over the last week since it has been at the shop. I have been working on cars my whole life and am not really buying the idea that knock is normal and will not cause engine damage over the long haul. Will keep info posted as to what Mercedes dealer tells me.

Mercedes dealer called and said that they believe the knock is coming from the bearings. They are going to tear engine down and replace bearings and oil pump. After getting car back, I think I'm going to go back to Audi's and get an A5. Had Audi's before and this is my first Mercedes and have had bad luck with it. I'll keep you posted on the engine teardown.
