BAD SYNCHRO? C300 sport 6-speed

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie posting for the 1st time.

I need help.....I have a 2008 C300 Sport 6-speed(56,500 miles). Yesterday morning while leaving the driveway it would not shift into 2nd gear. It feels as if it is not fully engaging & will grind if i force it. In addition, if i am at a standstill or even attempt to start the vehicle in 2nd and slowly release the clutch with it in 2nd gear the shifter just pops back into neutral.

All other gears are appear to be working just fine w/no grinding or any other issues.

Moreover, there have not been any noticeable issues w/the tranny.

I am taking it to the shop today, but, if anyone has any experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.

In my experience it could be a linkage adjustment issue or the 2nd gear syncro cones have failed.

Interested to hearwhat the workshop says.

The shop here (not the dealer) has not even dealt w/this transmission....the experienced MB Tech thinks that the 2nd gear synchro is bad but they have to research what replacement parts are available. They also stated it may just be easier to swap transmissions. Guess my next move is going to the dealer to hear what their diagnosis will be....Didnt realize when I bought the car how rare the 6 speed is...

Thanks for the feedback......& I will post any news on the resolution

Those symptoms point right at a synchro failure. Do you have an extended warranty since the original warranty has expired? This is not going to be cheap.

Just got word from the indy shop & they said due to the cost of the synchro i might as well get a new transmission for a price of $3000(they couldnt locate a refurbished unit)...so $4500 before taxes w/labor & $100 for fluids....just made my day....

Ouch. I would be trying to source one on my own and then finding some willing soul on here to help you change it out.

I think another quote may be in order before ordering anything. Including one from a Mercedes dealer which may include a warranty on the trans that an independent might not. Plus a dealer might just replace the failed part.

You can certainly drive it for a while without using 2nd gear.

With this sort of money involved , I would obtain a second opinion from MB on the cost of parts to repair your gearbox. & also another independent .

There are a lot more manuals in Europe. I would investigate the sourcing a second hand manual from there.

You are going to have to do some leg work yourself here.

Just wondered what caused the problem . Have you had the car since new ? Do you do racing changes from 1st to 2nd ?

I bought the car w/44k on it...2nd owner...I have fun driving it but not that hard...

Found a salvaged 6 speed online ....40k on it w/1 year warranty for $1125...

I would just be speculating on the cause.....but i know i am not going to allow any shop to drive the vehicle anymore unless i am in it w/them....

Still going to check around a little but doubt if i will find one cheaper..

Did you use Car-Part dot com? I just checked there and found one with 40K on it in Mass. No price listed though. You have to call.

THe trans in these cars dont seem to be any more difficult to swap then a standard manual vehicle. I would jump on the used trans, your probably looking at 1k to swap it so ur still less than half of ur original quote. Not too bad really

Yep, out of warranty, I would consider a used trans out of a car that had less miles. Some wrecking yards do offer reasonable warranties on engines and transmissions.

There also might be someone local to you like these guys:

Just a thought. There may be metal in the oil. If you are not having it repaired immediately then dropping the oil may be an idea.
