Question W204 heavy as a 1977 Chevy Caprice

I was just reading another car site and saw in 1977 Chevy reduced the weight of the 77 Caprice to 3,650 pounds. It made me remember my 2011 C300 comes in at about 3,550. I couldn't believe a 77 Caprice that was almost 3 feet longer, wider, etc., only weighed 100 pounds more.

Now I like my solid C300, and I'm not complaining about any aspect of it, I just have a hard time with the numbers. Then I checked out the commonly referred to "tank-like" W163. (78-85 300D). 3,495 pounds! 55 Pounds less!

Where is my c300 keeping this weight?

Modern more stringent requirements for front impact, side impact, fuel tank integrity in rear impact, roof crush.

Your way of thinking is funny op.

That chevy had nothing more than a motor, steering wheel, tranny, cassette deck and 2 sofas.

I would be here for days listing what is packed into your 204.

You must have meant W123 built from '77 to '85. I owned a '78 300D. 3-liter inline five with 77 raging horsepower.

Yes, the W123, I should have known, I had a 78' myself back in 93'. No turbo back then. I changed the fuel filter and did notice a bit more pickup.

Governed at 4400 rpm which was 99mph. Much like driving a 36hp VW Beetle. 21mpg in town and 28.5 highway. Not much different from my 3-liter 228hp C300 which is almost 50mph faster, ungoverned.

Progress HAS been made.
