Fog Light Problems?

I just got a certified used 2008 c300....manual. Having an issue with the fog lights...they seem to go on and off periodically. I've noticed in the reflection of cars when I'm at a light...the right one goes off, when the left stays on...and visa versa.

I took the car in this morning to the dealer, and he told me that the car is designed to do that...when you turn the wheels, the opposite fog light dims..and then goes out. So when he turned the wheel left, the right fog light went out. And when he turned the steering wheel right, the left fog light goes out.

Really?

That seems kindof strange to me. Is this how the car is designed? Still..I wouldn't think they should periodically go on and off when the car is at a stop light and pointed straight, right?

Any feedback on this would be helpful. I'm not entirely convinced I believe the dealership at the moment. Seems like a strange design if it's intended this way..not really sure the purpose of them going off when you turn the car.

Part of the P2 package is corner illuminating foglights (if your back seat folds down you have it). Try turning the foglights by the knob and see if they still go out. If they do- there is a problem.

The cornering light function does turn the respective fog light on when you are turning at slow speeds. I'm not actually sure whether it is triggered only by steering wheel input, or whether indicating alone activates the function. From your description it is not quite certain what exactly the car is doing, but I really doubt that it is doing anything else.

The purpose of this feature is to illuminate the area on the side of your car, where pedestrians or cyclists might be when you are making your turn. That is why C-Classes with this features have oval fog lights vs. round ones, because they are designed to bring additional light to the side of the car, as opposed to only acting as straight ahead fog-lights. It is actually quite noticeable when it is dark (although there are vehicles who have cornering lights built into their main headlights with dedicated bulbs that are even better at it – B-Class for instance). You have Xenon, right? When you are making a turn at night, you'll be able to see the area that is lit by the neutral Xenon and further to the side you'll notice the transition to the more yellowishly lit portion of the road/sidewalk. The latter is the additional safety margin that you get from the cornering lights

I know that some people might think that it looks stupid or if something is broken, but I prefer the added safety over whatever other people might think. I also can't comment on how the lights behave when you are driving with your fog lights on.

I have a 2008 C300 with the xenons. It seems the fog lights are triggered by steering input. If you park your car and leave your headlights on auto at night, the fog lights will be turned on along with your steering input. When you turn your steering wheel right then the right fog turns on, turn left and vice versa. Also the sport model has round fog lights and luxury has oval ones which is just a design not functionality.

I'm confused by some conflicting info in this thread. I have a '09 C350 with P2, should I get the oval or round fog light covers? Thanks.

If I remembered correctly, oval is for luxury models and round for sports model. So depends on what model C class you have.

Thanks. I have the C350 so sport - and they look circular to me - but I wasn't sure because I also read that the P2 package had oval and non-P2 was circular. Can anyone confirm was Garry said?

I don't want to bump old threads but didn't want to create a new one. Are these two things all I need to replace one side:

http://www.carid.com/2008-mercedes-c-class-bumpers/replace-front-bumper-insert-9954747.html

And is there anything I should know about buying the products or any tips in general about these fog lights? By the way I have an 08 c300. Edit: Or has anyone completely deleted the fog lights and replace it with mesh?
