Serious question here from, clearly, a low-information non-collector....

Aside from timekeeping accuracy, what makes a watch "best in the world"?

I think you Tag might be an Asian Knock-Off. All the text on the dial is backwards.

Totally subjective.
1.Accuracy
2.Limited availability
3.Prestige
4.Durability

Nobody really needs time that accurate...

if they do, then most likely they will be working with some type of computer device anyway which already has the exact GMT time... technology has caught up with mechanics of watches that used to be the only and best way to keep time...

other than prestige from having an exclusive designer or precious metals involved, i can never unsterstand the exact time argument...

a $10 kmart watch will probably be only a handful of seconds out of sync over a year with the fanciest designer watch in the world...

does this really matter for the avg person? correct me if im wrong...

Thanks for the interesting points of view. The accuracy issue is just another emotional desire. I have no emotional receptors for prestige nor specific metals in a watch, but I get a kick out of accuracy for its own sake, just like I appreciate exact gaps in a car's bodywork. I developed disdain for my Rolex for failing by a few minutes (always fast) a month since 1988. To me, they are the Jaguar of watches and never figured out quality. But, I strongly admire my couple of hundred buck Casio Atomic Solars for having the second hand sweep over the 12 just as the radio news channel sounds that tone indicating the top of the hour. I'm in awe of that level of perfection.

Further, there is not necessarily a connection between accuracy and cost.

My list was different criteria for owners. Not all inclusive for one time piece.

I almost bought a Submariner Date yesterday, but decided to walk away. I am currently looking at the Omega Seamaster 300 M GMT and the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 5. I like both of them, and at the current price of the Rolex, I can buy both, and still have money leftover to put gas in the tank of my car. LOL!

BTW, I am been told that Rolex is rasing its prices once again, second time this year.
