The only issue I would see with a hard drive would be if there is enough power to spin the drive up.
When you plug it in/turn it on - put the drive to your ear and make sure it spins up fully. If you hear it clicking rhythmically like a clock - it most likely isn't getting the juice it needs to get turning.

Also have the Universal Media Interface ($400 option in SA). It includes 3 AUX cables, including one for ipod.
