C Class Electric Cabin Heating?
On the diesel web page they mention a 1KW !! electric element in the coolant circuit which is supposed to supply heat to the cabin before the engine coolant heats up .
I have noticed that my cabin heater starts to produce heat after only half a Km from cold which is astonishing!
I have aways understood that the cooling circuit was designed to favour the heater first before heating the rest of the coolant.
Looking at WIS I see all sorts of strange heating methods including diesel fuel!.
Could anyone enlighten me?

In the abscence of any info I resorted to Google which came up with the following from Benz World.
E220 CDi Cabin pre-heater
--Question------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently acquired a 2001 E220 CDi, the operating manual refers to a cabin pre-heater (apparently unique to the CDi models)with an on/off control located beside the cigarette lighter behind the ashtray panel. Apparently if used, it reduces fuel economy. Does anyone know how this device is supposed to work and the reason why its use should affect fuel economy.
Answer:-
I guess you're talking about the 'standheizung' system.
It's a small heater that uses diesel.
you can program it to like start up 15minutes before you leave for work on a cold winter morning. It burns the diesel, and it heats a circuit of the cooling water of the engine. It hereby blows hot air into the cabin when you havent even touched your car.
It's very handy if you have cold winters.
I think it saves a bit of fuel because i presume it works a bit like a block heater, your engine will be on temperature much sooner then normal.
greetz,
matteus.

It's actually a heater element (looks like a mini radiator) inside the heaterbox. it doesn't heat up the coolant but it's solely for the cabin. It effectively heats the engine faster as the coolant isn't used for heating purposes when the engine is still in the warmup phase, just electrical heating. It doesn't work all the time, it usually just operated when ambient temps below approx 8-12C depending on the model. for colder climates they use an additional fuel fired heater that has approx 5-6kw capacity that also heats the coolant.
Newer OM651 engines will even turn off the water pump for upto 2 mins after cold start to help aid faster warmup so the electrical heater is used a little more often on these models as there is no coolant flow at all when cold.

Ausmbteck,
Thanks for the welcome information.
Does our Aus 2007/8 w204 220CDI have this heater element in the heaterbox?
