Rear Fog, Is there any way to get both sides?
#2
Why would you want to is the question. Point of having a single rear fog is so that people don't think your brakes are on while also providing an extra source of light in dense fog.

Gaz I was thinking the samething too cause before my C-Class I had an Audi A4 and it had the rear foglights on both sides and my brother's BMW 3 series has the rear foglight on both sides too and I thought that looks much better than a single rear foglight. Doanster people can also think your on your breaks with a single tail light working and having both rear foglights working will give the other drivers a better look at your vehicle and more precaution.

On my Passat, I had to actually mod it to add (socket and wiring were there, but needed bulb and new headlight switch). A4 forums had the same threads about this same question, asking how to enable both. This was for the B5/B6 cars, though.

It stands to reason that those of you asking why you can't have a rear fog on both sides are the same people who I see driving around with their rear fogs on for no reason. If this is not what you do, then I apologize - no offense intended.
People who drive around with them on are seen as fools by those who know better -- not to mention being blinded! Also, it's probably illegal but I'm too lazy to check...

This is a most interesting and educational discussion.
As a Certified Fossil old enough to remember Hella aftermarket bolt on rear fog lights (Rhine River Valley, 1969), I was very pleased to find a single, left rear mounted, inboard of the left brake light fog light as standard equipment on my 1999 Volvo S70. I am not sure when these became standard on European cars. The opposite location on the right has a blinded off socket for another fog light. I figured it was easier/cheaper to make a single triple bulb socket and cover the non-fog light location on the right. Reading the above yasterday...Lightbulb! Right hand drive vehicles. Switch the location of the covered socket and Bob's your Uncle! Right rear fog lights for Sweden, UK, Japan, India, etc.
Apparently several other auto makers took an even easier, and far less clever, route to providing rear fog lights for both driver's side solutions.
Cheers!

2002 Audi Allroads: 2 rear fogs, 2007 Range Rover: 2 rear fogs, 2006 S4 Audi: 2 rear fogs, And C5 Corvette (US spec) I had to add one to be legal when it was in Eu. But all EU spec had two.
Our ML: on on the left for Left hand drive.
What is sad is that rear fogs should be monitory for all cars/trucks in the US, but there not. I have added a rear fog to all of our vehicles (Old school hella type). We live in a fog/snow prone area and it's good to be seen.

Amen! As a veteran of part of a winter in the Rhine Valley, I am a huge fan of fog lights. I did not know that rears were on both sides in the EU. My Volvos, 1999 & 2004, only had the left rear funtional. Now I realize that the unused right rear was for the rest of the world, non-USA.
I am not at all pleased with M-B forcing the DRL LED front strips in place of real fog lights with the Lighting Package on the GLK.

First, MBs are country-coded to define what happens electronically. Which means that cars marketed in drive-on-left countries do have a right rear fog light and not the left. And, you can't can't convert a US model to a UK model, for example, to get UK features because that DVD is not available here.
Here's how it's done:
The rear fog light uses the same bulb filament as the upper taillight, running on reduced voltage to equal the brightness of the lower taillight bulb. When the rear fog is selected by pulling the switch to the second stop, the rear SAM ups the voltage to that filament to 12V, thus brightening it.
So it's clear that changing wires around in the taillight plug is no answer and what could be done in older cars or other makes is irrellevant.
In fact, I installed sockets (where needed) and extra bulbs in every other MB I've ever owned in the rear fog positions to add more brake lights since I see no use for rear fogs here. I did that in my '01 C320 by disconnecting the rear fog wire and running a connection across the back of the tail llight board to the fog sockets from the brake light. But if I accidentally pulled out the rear fog switch I immediately lit the bulb out warning.
That kind of mod can no longer be used as I explained.

OK, this is the reason why US cars cannot illuminate what would be the right rear fog light.

Scroll up to post #21 for the explanation of why this cannot be done in the W204.
