Windows acting funny??

I've read the manual and searched the forum, but still can't totally figure out an issue with the windows.

I know that there's the convenience feature that allows you to roll them all the way up or down if pressed all the way. However sometimes (it's hard to recreate) when attempting to roll them all the way up with a "full pull" it doesn't work. And sometimes if you hold them with a "full pull" until they are fully rolled up they will go back down about a 1/4 inch???

This happens on both of the front side windows. Anyone heard of this and or know how to avoid it or if it's normal?

thanks,
BZ

Ok so I'm not alone and the problem has been around for a few years...

Thanks for the response. Maybe someone else will post with their experience.

Cool! So when you took it in and explained it to them, they knew what you were talking about then?

Yea exactly. Dropped it off and picked it up the next day because I was there for service A1 and I discovered the problem right before my first service and told them about the windows as well. Picked it up and windows worked just fine again. Hope that helped.

Awesome, thanks for the info. The car isn't two weeks old yet, and the problem doesn't happen all that often.

So next time it's in, I'll mention it. Thanks for the info!!

Same thing happens here. When I pull in to the garage and lift full bore on the two front window switches, drivers side lifts immediately while the passenger side goes about a 1/4 inch then drops completely open. It will go all the way if I pull on the passenger switch again almost like its an electrical load thing going on. Just kind of a P.I.T.A. to hassel with the service department for.

This is a normal and common issue. It also happens any time the battery is disconnected. The window(s) affected have lost their 'sync' and need to be re-synced. This happens because the system 'remembers' where "closed" is, and how much force it needed to raise the window - that way when you try to use auto up, it knows when it should be fully up and that it isn't crushing anything.

To resync simply roll your window all the way down, then fully close the window WITHOUT USING THE AUTO UP FEATURE - this means pull the window switch up one click, NOT 2. Once the window is closed continue to hold the button up the 1 click for 5 seconds or so. Voilà, that window is reset.

This is also explained in the owners manual and if you search the forum.

I read the manual, and searched the forum. And said as much in the first post.

The explaination, even after being read 3-4 times still didn't make a whole lot of sense to me , so I thought I'd ask.

Your explaination is better than the manuals, so thanks for the post!

No worries, you're post helped me. I took a spin and got the drivers working right. The passenger's side took at least 3 tries to get it sync'd now I think I'm good to go!! Thanks!

Now I don't have to listen to my lovely wife talk trash about my new girlfriend, um I mean car!

Hard to understand why a search couldn't find it since it's been discussed dozens of times since the W204 came out and the same thing happens in the W203 (had both) and the fix is the same. The fix also applies to the sunroof when that goes berserk.

To repeat, hold the window switch in the close position for an additional five seconds after it stops and then in the open position for another five seconds and the fault will be eliminated. If not, do it again.

And when the sunroof fails to one-touch close but just stutters, do the same thing.

You would think after ten years this problem would have been eliminated but nooooo........

The problem can occur when a battery is disconnected, but in all of our experiences, it is not always the case. Most of the time it occurs when you are opening/closing the window and hit a rough road surface. This can cause the window to "lose" sync. I must admit though, on all my other cars with automatic windows, this never has happened. But commonly happens on my w204... Go figure.

Perhaps the Mercedes-Benz system is a bit more complex and this is where the car is "over-engineered" where the technology or safety systems are too much sophisticated for their own good.

The process above is the re-sync method that the dealer does.
