Brake Pads

I had an indicator come on saying I need new brake pads, should I order some from the dealer and put it on myself or just let them put it on. It's my first time putting on brake pads so I don't know how difficult it would be, but I couldn't imagine it being too hard. Any comment would be helpful thanks.

How many miles do you have on the your car ? I've been toying around with the idea of putting new ones on but not sure if I really need them yet .

you will at least need to replace the brake sensors too. Also, did you check the front pads or rear pads?? do u have a caliper tool to measure the disk thickness??? make sure you have at least 1/2 the disk thickness before replaceing the pads.....

if you do you own oil change and tire rotation and air filter change, doing the brake pads and disk is a good way to learn more

look at tire rack for the parts, they have centric which are very well made and good value

I have a little more than 46k on mine and the sensor just came on. I'll get a quote from the dealership and auto places around the area to get an idea of what the cost will be.

I would not use OE pads again because of excessive dust. Based on wide-spread recommendations, I tried Akebono EUR pads, and after great success on one car, now use them on four cars, again with great success. Excellent performance and feel and essentially no dust.

Just a note that my 2012 E350 Coupe (similar to the W204 chassis) has no brake dust, at all. Similar feedbacks were also reported from other 2012 owners in our sister forums.

(e.g. https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...rake-dust.html)

Mercedes might have changed to new brake pads in its 2012 models. Check with our dealer parts department, and see if they can look up more insights about the new brake pads.

With best regards,

got a quote from a shop. 1300 for front and rear brakes, performance rotors on front and just regular rotors on rear and brake sensor.

cool thing to know that the oem brake pads will be replace for free the next time i do brake work so i only have to pay for the rotors and sensor.

the shop actually called mercedes during the write up for the prices for the parts.

yah what is up with all the brake dust on my rims? is that normal?

check out porterfield 4S pads for the car. Not cheap, but better grab and very low dust.

Are MB rotors exceptionally thin from the start? If not, and if you haven't gouged your rotors by waiting too long (doesn't sound like that's the case), then you shouldn't need new rotors.

But I've yet to own a MB so somebody correct me if I'm wrong and that it's normal for MBs to wear through rotors at the same rate as pads.

If anyone is interested in slightly used (5k miles) OEM brake system (pads, rotors, etc) let me know. They're just taking up space in my storage right now after I swapped to brembos.

I noticed that the rims get covered in brake dust from the oem mercedes brake pads. I switched to autozone brake pads - the duralast gold brand and the dust was at a minimum.

I run the duralast golds on my 05 c230k and it's been perfectly fine.

Yeah, it's normal because they are metallic pads, not ceramic. Tradeoff is better braking performance or less dust.

yah it doesn't make any sense to me to always have to change the rotor EVERY TIME you do brake work. what the guy told me was that the pads are warranted for as long as i'm the owner of the car and that i just need to pay for the rotors and sensors and they'll replace my pads no charge. i should go back and ask what if my pads are worn out and my rotors are still good, would they replace my pads without purchasing rotors and sensors.... hmmmm actually this doesn't make any sense to me now that i'm typing all this out i'm gonna go to another place to hear their story and go to MB itself to see what they'll say.

guess i found something to do today

You should be able to find the new and replacement specs (minimum thickness) for the rotors and measure them to see how much they've worn since new. I use semi-metallic brakes on my truck and after 168K miles I've only replaced rotors twice (second time was just a few months ago.) And that was the front. The back have only needed to be replaced once.
