$1,100 to fix. Will take a week(?) for the part to come. My car will be ready week or the weekend if part arrives sooner. 2 years/unlimited miles warranty on replacement part. Indy shop would not touch the car since it required a MB dealer as it was a theft deterrent issue.
Service Adviser was telling me some horror stories others had when they had same issue. Stuck in front of a grocery store, blocking a street, etc.

Same thing had happened to my 2011 C300. Wont start, steering wheel is locked and most likely heading into the dealer for fixin. Thank you all for making me sure that it is my ignition switch that has the problem and not my ESL as my extended warranty will not cover it.

@Jadedbleu Did you get your car fixed?

I lucked out, if that can be said, my steering wheel was not locked, so repair was easier. I immediately recognize the difference, the sound is louder and the feedback is pronounced.

2011 C300 4matic
same issue - steering immobilizer lockout

Same issue on my car, 2011 C300 4matic. Dealer said it would be 1700 to fix + tow. I was able to jiggle the steering a little to allow the lock to disengage, and drove straight home in case it did it again. Intermittent and scary - one could be stranded in a snow storm in a remote area here and not be able to start the car for heat nor drive it to a safe place.

Any updates on a recall?
Thanks

Had exact same problem, Grocery store to and the same time at night lol.
Pull up console surrounding the gear lever and there will be a yellow lever indide. Pull or push.
I wanted to put this post together for everyone because this seems to be a common issue with Mecedes-Benz. In short, I believe that the ignition switch
is bad.

Last night I went to the grocery store. My 2011 C300 started up fine and I drove to the store. I jump in the car to leave the store, insert & turn key, ........no response....no radio.....no idiot lights......nothing but the center of the speedo lighting up showing the display of time, temp, and mileage.

My first response was to go back into the store, purchase a new battery for my key and give that a try. No success....this made no difference.

My second response was to have my wife bring me my spare key. No success....this did not work either.

Hmmm.....What now?? ........I call Mercedes Roadside. Its 8:30 a night but they send out a tech for a jump start. (Clearly obvious to me that this would not work) However, I go to through the motions to follow their procedure.
Its a "no go" and tech states the car needs to be towed.

9:15PM - Flat Bed Tow truck shows up. Can't get car out of Park and he(nor I) want to drag the car onto the truck. 2nd truck comes with Dollies(Pretty Cool!!) Success, 10:30 PM I finally get to go home.

Mercedes-Benz is diagnosing at this time but they only have one of my keys and are requesting the other to fully diagnose the issue. I told them the problem is not with they keys. They don't have a loaner car available to me so I can't even go home to get the key. I got a ride with a co-worker this morning.

I will keep you posted on the progress. Anyone else have ignition switch problems??[/QUOTE]

Sorry phone is rough.
c300 Pop console around the stick shift and pull yellow lever, at least you can get it into N to get on the tow truck.

2015 C350 Coupe
Back in December my 2012 C250 coupe started having ESL issues as you describe. 4 days at the dealer and they could not duplicate the issue. They gave it back to me undiagnosed. I traded it on a 2015 C350 coupe. This may well be my last MB as I'm not too fond of the direction MB has gone with the interiors of the W205 and W206. and i hear that the C class coupe won't be available in the W206. At least I'm enjoying my W204.

I know your post is almost 10 years old, but here it is 2023 and the C300 is apparently still having the same EIS issue. I have a 2014 C300 4 Matic , 70k miles, immaculate condition, until Thanksgiving 2022 when I went to take my daughter to school and the car wouldn't crank or start. Of course I was a new Mercedes owner (bought it from a private party in 2021) and knew very little about them. Bought a new key fob battery, no difference. Bought a new car battery for $350 stlll no difference. Did the same thing as yours, nothing. Had to have it towed with dollies, couldn't get it out of park and the tow driver nor myself wanted to pop the gear shift cover off. Towed it to my local MB dealership, diagnosed a faulty ignition switch, estimate for repair $2,878. That was January 10th. Today is February 9th, 2023, and still no car, and they don't even call to keep me updated. I have to call and ask if any loaners became available and of course they say no every time. All loaners are being utilized and the ignition switch is on back order with no ETA. My service advisor said they have 5 cars all waiting for an EIS. This has been a nightmare. I'm a solo mom and have had to register my daughter for the school bus because I can't pick her up , no car, missed plenty of appointments, Drs appointments, birthday parties, school events , with no end in sight. I can't afford $2k month for a rental car. If MB has known about this EIS or even ELS, For years , why won't they recall it and fix our cars? How long is this chip shortage going to go on for?
I miss my girl. Miss my Sirius XM which I had to cancel. Don't want to pay $32 months for a service I'm not able to use for a few months. Is this what I have to look forward to with this car? It was under warranty right up until I purchased it from the seller. Mint condition, so I thought. Even had a mechanic look it over and spoke to sellers mechanic saw maintenance records etc. 1st 8 months I had her, the wheel speed sensors went bad. Cost $580 to replace the 2 front , but wasn't an issue, was in and out and back to me in 24 hours. I have heard of some people waiting 4 to 5 months. This is insane.
Oh, you mentioned they asked you for the 2nd key. I heard they needed to try 2 keys also before diagnosing but they never asked me for a 2nd key. I only have 1, so I couldn't have Given them a 2nd, but how can they be positive it's not my key, if they didn't try a 2nd one?

Ignition switches do fail, but it’s in no way universal.

As far as diagnosis, the second key makes it easier. But the dealer has computerized diagnostics. They can test the key independently. Then they can use it and follow the signals to find the failed component. It’s all part of a very complicated anti-theft system.

What you DON’T want is to have an out of warranty Mercedes serviced at the dealer. The dealer prices are 2-3 times what you’d pay at a German car shop or an independent MB specialist. As a single mother, I would assume you don’t do your own maintenance and repairs. You need to look into an aftermarket warranty with a reasonable deductible.

MBs, except for a couple of notable exceptions, are not really unreliable, but when they do break, they are more expensive to fix than domestic brands.

I'm confused Odd Piggy

Your reply to me has me scratching my head. Did I not post in the right section? Did you take my "gender" as ignorance? You said the ignition switch problem is not universal. Ok, maybe not, but it's definitely monumental. Have you not read the 100's and 100's of complaints from other owners with the same issue? And obviously the dealership is going to rob me blind , but being it's a theft related part, as you stated so yourself, THERE IS NO WHERE ELSE THAT I CAN TAKE IT FOR REPAIR. The Indy mechanics have to order the parts from MB DEALERSHIP,, SO THEY CERTAINLY WONT GET IT ANY FASTER. AND IM IN BREVARD COUNTY FLORIDA. NOT MANY OPTIONS. I CALLED EVERY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND NONE OF THEM CAN HELP ME, EXCEPT 1 BUT HE EVEN SAID IT WOULDN'T BE FIXED ANY SOONER BECAUSE MB EILL NOT SEND HIM THE PART WHEN THEY HAVE A HALF DOZEN CUSTOMERS THEY HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF FIRST
OBVIOUSLY AS A SINGLE MOTHER , YOU ARE CORRECT, I DONT WANT TO BE WITHOUT A WARRANTY, BUT WARRANTIES EXPIRE, WHICH MINE DID BEFORE I EVEN PURCHASER THE VEHICLE AND MY OPTIONS ARE LIMITED CONSIDERING THE DEALERSHIP DR DOESN'T SELL WARRANTIES ON 2014 VEHICLES THAT Weren't PURCHASED FROM THEM , SO I COULD SPEND $3,800 ON A CAR SHIELD OR ENDURANCE. WARRANTY, AND THATS NOT FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE. SO IM CONFUSED AS TO WHAT HELP YOU WERE OFFERING, OR NOT OFFERING, IN YOUR REPLY. IM PRETTY RESOURCEFUL, FOR A "FEMALE". UNLESS I GO THE "EMULATOR" ROUTE, THEY HAVE ME AGAINST A WALL.

That EIS issue is caused by a small $10 motor in EIS box under steering column

The problem with all these Mercedes EIS issues is a $10 motor which I replaced on mine when it happened at 80,000 miles. It's a pain to get to the part but there are a couple YouTube videos that helped me and It's actually not that hard. Most people won't want to take apart their car this way but it will save you thousands in labor and parts that the dealership or any mechanic will want to charge you. It's literally a $10 motor that I've actually seen in toys I took apart as a kid. 99% of these issues every is having is that stupid POS motor.

I understand you’re frustrated, and I empathize, but shouting (CAPS) and a combative attitude won’t get you the help you need any faster, here or elsewhere.

Well, any assumptions of ignorance on my part had to do with the fact that you appeared to be a first time Mercedes owner and not female. If that’s wrong, my apologies. I don’t equate ignorance with stupidity. I was trying to give information and share opinions of a long time Mercedes owner.

I also wasn’t aware that a car shield warranty was $3,800. I was quoted half that for my 2013. Even at that, I do most of my own repairs because I have a well equipped shop and the time to do it. But our people hauler is dealer maintained because it’s new, under warranty, and taking it out of service without a replacement is not an option.

You’ve probably already run this issue down, but just thought I would mention it. Emulator has come up in your reply and another alludes to it. Is the diagnosis the EIS (ignition switch) or the ESL (steering lock)? As far as I know the little motor that fails is in the ESL and not the EIS. The emulator fixes the ESL problem, but not the EIS problem.

Also, there are used W204 ignition switches on eBay. A shop that has the capability to erase and retrain the system can used one to get you back on the road. It’s more complicated than starting with a new one. The dealer won’t do it, though.
