Comand knob problem

Command Knob
It's interesting to read these posts and see that everybody's knob is crapping out after about four years. I have an 09 C300 and mine just went out last month. Lucky for me I have the extended warranty and it didn't cost me anything.
Funny thing when I was there I had a noise out of the rear which I thought was the rear bearings. Turns out it was the rear differential which they also replaced in warranty.

I did as the video instructed to include cutting the wires. I epoxied it in 2 steps. First was to put the 2 halves back together. Then, I took my dremel tool and made lines extending past the break and I laid some copper wire strands across the break and filled it all in with epoxy in stage 2. I think it will take an elephant to break it now. Thx alot for this thread, I have my zoom back for the maps.

2008 C-Class Scroll Wheel Dies
This is too strange to be a coincidence. I just had the scroll wheel "die" on my '08 C300 as well after 4.5 years. The car is technically out of warranty so now I just the posting and not pleasant to know that I now have to spend 400 bucks which is equivalent of a Service A/B for this little non-critical part. What the heck (

2008 C-Class Scroll Wheel Dies
The internal shaft breaks about 4 years after the build date. Thanks you guys in this forum, I found the YouTube video on how to repair the internal shaft in the command Control Knob:

I was able to get the unit and wire out intact without cutting the wire. I did this by unscrewing the 3 large torx screws on the yellow box holding the stick shift and moving it forward out of the way. I was then able to pick out the wire which is wedged in behind a few other wires.

I have a 2009 C300, and the scrolling function on the Command knob went out too, so reading the entries in this forum, is the correct part that I need to order for my 2009, C300 part no. 2048700679?
Thanks everybody for the info.

My command knob also stopped scrolling at the 4 year mark.
Maybe this "timed failure" is MB's subtle way to suggest extending the factory warranty?

Have the same problem with my Mercedes 2009 W204 C220CDI hasn't been working for about a week now.
Mercedes C-Class I-Drive Switch Controller (Scrolling Knob Wheel COMAND Command Console Control)
Not happy, after reading on here this seems to be a common problem breaking at around 4 yrs.
I will be ringing tomorrow to see what the local dealer can do for me, the car is out of warranty however, I have a 5 year Good Will which ends November this year.
Part No I have is below

Just found out the price (Scrolling Knob Wheel Command Console)
Not happy $1050.99
Spoke to MB customer service and he has denied theirs any problem with this part.
Also having intermittent trouble with the ignition switch have no idea what to expect next.
I'm seriously thinking of trading out of this heap of crap
Sorry for repeating myself I'm slightly pissed off in the 2 years i have owned this car I have replaced.
1.Cruise control
2.water pump
3.thermostat housing
4.charge air hose
5.all engine mounts
6.Burnt out rear taillights twice.
And now i'm looking at replacing
7.Scrolling Knob Wheel Command Console
8.ignition switch

I bought a MY11 Sep 10 Build E350 today with push Button" not scrolling either. I live in Australia and apparently MB here comes with a 3 year warranty. So mine is well under 4 years. I agree with the comments on this page. This is a defect in manufacturing and anyone that pays $76,000 for a Mercedes Benz should expect a quality car. I previously drove a Toyota 4 wheel drive from new to 270,000 Kms without anything going wrong except for the usual service and wear and tear things. The kids have gone and this was my retirement present to myself after 50 years of working. I suppose its a myth that you buy over engineered excellence when you buy a MB. I am thinking I should have bought a quality car like a Toyota (Lexus) where the manufacturer would recall a defective car and replace/repair what is obviously a defect.

What state do you live in, I'm going to be ring customer service once again shortly and pressing them on replacing the scrolling knob, if not I'll take it to the papers and give them some bad publicity obviously these parts are a manufacture problem and should be replaced.
For heavens sake, surely, you can't blame it on ware & tear if the bloody shaft breaks, if the cogs ware out then fair enough.

2010 C300 lux, also just went out on my a few months ago. Four years exact considering 2010's were created/avail on summer 09.
Quite interesting. First thing my lady said when she saw that spinny knob when i got the car was "oh wow gotta be careful with that touchy thing"
I just imagined when I first saw it like, "damn thats kind of a sensitive intricate little thing to put in a car...."
It gets SOO much abuse from some people just spinning spinning spinning every day for years.... I dont think its MB's planned obselence, but moreso just a risky design idea.
200-400 is too much for such a simple thing for me, and the process to replace it DIY style seems like itll loosen stuff and make more noises and cause me grief.
I just hold down or up the knob to scroll fast through my music list. Sure, not as fluid as the spin feature but it still works.... 200 id rather spend on anything else. I imagine this little dohinkey will break again no doubt

I don't agree it's a risky design there's a fault with the shaft it's to weak,
It's not as if the cogs are wearing out, the shaft is breaking, and Mercedes should have corrected this fault long before now.
This part is not cheap, I was quoted just over a thousand dollars and that's not installed so one would assume it should last a lot longer than around the 4 years.

2011 C300 4MATIC SPORT
My 2011 c300 4matic sport's command knob just stopped scrolling a few days ago... Glad I found this thread! Looks like I will be calling the dealer tomorrow to schedule a warranty repair on it.... Funny thing is when it first stopped working, my steering wheel up and down buttons (left side of wheel), had stopped working as well. I could scroll left and right on my dashboard menu but it would not change radio stations or scroll through the telephone contacts using the wheel... The wheel functions came back after I turned the car on and off a few times after normal driving but my command knob scrolling never did. Are these problems related or just a coincidence?

This fix was a pocket saver. Took me about 30 minutes to take out and epoxy. Let it set over night and then reinstalled it. Has been working for a few weeks now and couldn't be happier.
