mac ~ as you know the EIS is the top of the control pyramid. My experience of EIS failures is that they are electronic. I would nevertheless like to hear holy's reply.

Same issue - 2009 W204 with 40k miles
My wife told me that sometimes her car does not start and I did not believe her at first. I played with it for a while today and it is definitely starting to do this. Sometimes it does not work, but after pulling and reinserting the key it eventually does unlock the steering column and start the car. The issue is the same with both keys, and there is nothing else attached to the car key (would not really matter since the key slot is not a lock that gets mechanical stress, just a hole that holds the key). I just hope that it does not completely die at some point and I will have to get it towed .... the repair will have to wait until after tax day. Of course this happened just 3 months after the warranty ended.

Approximately 10 vehicles are affected? How can they be so sure? Last time I was at the dealer they only performed the cam solenoid recall and the SA didn't even mentioned this EIS campaign.

My car just died today the same problem went to 7/11 came back in the car and boom nothing comes on the key turns all the way til start and it doesnt crank. Called the dealer they said it might be the starter you might be having a eis failure, quoted me $1200 just for the part, this sucks **** man i never had a problem with my car and now this came up at the wrong timing. Reading other posts i am guessing replacing the eis bs is the only solution.

Remember to check start enable fuses 6, 7, 19, 27 first before jumping to conclusions.

I did not had to pay, but just note that if you insert the key and the WRR-Sound is not heard, its probably a problem with the (key &) lock, which in my case was the lock, which make sense.
Although I thought it was the EIS, and they told me the EIS was replaced, the account indicated the lock's-electronic module was replaced. This is a 1/4 of the EIS price or less and is not the EIS. Thats how I understand the problem now. So they may charge you for EIS and replace lock.

a friend of my dad is going to come by my house with the computer system to check out the problem i wont take the car to the dealer and get ripped off, once i have an update i will let you guys know if there is a easy fix to it rather then paying over 1200 for some bs that should had a recall on it. I love my car a lot but this is a real big disappointment i didnt know its a common problem until it happened to me and i did my research on it.

Any OP can advise if replacing as a preventive measure the IAS in my 2009 C300 makes any sense? I keep reading here that some 09' C300 model year car are also being affected. Does the recall for 08" cars cover us also? My car has now 35K miles, and is not showing any failure to start up the vehicle, but my worry is that the issue starts right around 40K miles. Danilo, how many miles on your 09" C300 ?

My 2008 C300 would not start yesterday after driving it to a local restaurant. The door locks, lights, radio windows all worked fine, but the engine would not crank when the key was turned and I could not shift it into neutral. It was towed to a local MB dealership last night and they informed me it is the EIS and the cost to repair it will be $2,500! I asked about this recall campaign. They said there is no such recall for my car. I called MB USA and talked to them about it and they said the campaign only covered 10 vehicles and my car was not covered. Seems hard to believe they would send a notice to all MB dealerships regarding 10 vehicles.
I asked about the cost to repair and they said each dealer sets its own labor rates and that I could shop around. Kind of difficult when I can't drive the car.
I am very disappointed with MB because this seems to be a pretty wide spread issue based on all the posts I have read.

Update
Here is an update on my situation. I decided to call another dealership (Knauz Continental Autos) to see what they would charge to fix my EIS and steering lock. I spoke to the assistant service manager, who said he has never seen both the EIS and steering lock go out at the same time. He asked if the first dealership had tested with both keys. I told him that they only had one key, so no they had not. He said that they could not have isolated the problem unless they had both keys.
I spoke to the service tech at the first dealership and asked him about this. He responded that he did not need the key, he was certain that both the EIS and steering lock needed to be replaced. At that point I was feeling very uncomfortable with what he was telling me, so I had the car towed to the second dealership at a cost of $120.
The second dealer tested with both keys and said that the problem was the steering lock and that the EIS was ok. The cost to repair the lock was $789, significantly less than the $2,500 quoted by the first dealer to get my car running again.
After getting my car back and confirming that everything was operating correctly, I called the service manager at the first dealership and requested that they refund the $150 they charged me to diagnose the problem with my car and the $120 it cost me to tow it to the second dealership. He agreed to refund the $150 but said he won't refund the $120. Needless to say, they will not be getting any of my business in the future.

Damn dealers always want to replace EIS & ESL together instead of diagnosing properly!

So my ESL failed last week.
they didn't replace the EIS......I made sure to ask them to troubleshoot if it was EIS or ESL.
also, i asked my service adviser to ask MBUSA to pay for some of it since it's such a wide spread issue......and he did.
they bill came to be $650 instead of $980.......still alot but saved $300
