I spent a lot of time on this when I first go the car. I just don't have time to deal with the issue any more. Also, I'm leasing it so I'm hoping to dump the car soon. I've driven lots of loaners when I first started pursuing this problem and noted the wide variance in sounds from other c250s. I couldn't get any dealer to change any parts. It was just too much time out of my life. I'm glad some people are having pisitive outcomes. Maybe mercedes will take ownership of the problem. I'm done.
The only thing that puzzles me is the fact that I drove several c250 loaner cars and out of 3-4 cars I drove only one was making similar rattle noise to the one my car is making. In fact the high pressure fuel pump might me the root of all problems. I haven't purchased the car brand new and maybe whoever had the car before me was using cheap low quality gas.

Glad the issue was repaired. Sad that it was the HPFP. I hope MB isn't making the same mistake BMW/MINI did with their HPFP and resulting lawsuit fiascos. Ebola in the U.S.? Who cares!...we've got Direct Injection implementations to worry about!

I've scheduled appointment with dealership tomorrow. Hopefully they will be able to figure out what is causing the problem without blaming direct injection.

Hey guys don't hate me for a such a late reply to this post.
I'm old & brand new to this forums stuff.
I have a 2012 C250 coupe turbo 4cyl (since new) & currently have 125000 kms on it. That's a little over 75K miles. yeah I drive a lot :-). Engine started making this rattling noise during start up at the 85K mark. Engine light came on & off over the next few weeks. I reported right away to the dealer because the warranty is over at 80K. Long & short of it is - cam adjusters need to be replaced. This is an
all day $1200 parts $1000 labour job (+tax)
I love the car, but feel pretty bummed about such a major fault at such an early stage in the car's life.
Anyway, all I wanted to say was if you get this odd rattle during start up, get the codes read asap before any warranties lapse.
I am curious to see if anyone else is experiencing this issue with this engine, so please feel free to post my story anywhere it can be spread. Maybe there should be a recall on these cam adjuster parts

Have you had any issues since the cam adjuster was replaced? I would hate to have the problem creep up again.

Stupid question: what exactly does a cam adjuster do/entail on these M271 engines? I researched and noises at start-up on previous M271 engines were due to timing chains. Are the cam adjusters and rattling/failing timing chains related at all?

I'm not sure if they problem was related to the ECU SB, which was also completed while the car was in for service to replace the cam adjusters.

Crap! I just googled M271 camshaft adjuster. This problem is well-documented since early 2000s. I thought the updated M271 Evo was a better engine, but I'm not so sure. Hopefully the Evo camshaft adjuster replacement before 100k miles was just a fluke and not indicative of anything more common.

Cam Shaft Gear
Only 75000 miles on 2012 Mercedes 250 and had a rattling noise for a few seconds after cranking. Problem was faulty cam shaft gears and cost $4,000.00 to repair. Very disappointing for a car that is supposed to be high quality and well engineered. No warranty. I have read that this not an isolated case and that others are having the same problem.

camshaft Adjusters
At 95,000 miles I too had a rough start and CEL come on. Diagnosis Camshaft Adjusters replacement. $3,500.00. This needs to be recalled. My mechanic told me the part has been upgraded twice.

I own a Mercedes C250 2012 and it is making the exact same sound in the video while driving around 1-1.5k rev. did you get it fix? if so, what was the problem?

Hey mongo6407, did they ever solve your problem? I feel your frustration because I went through the exact same thing with my C. Engine rattle while accelerating, usually in high gears, and multiple knock sensor error codes when scanned. The solution is really simple, and it took my dealer months to figure it out, thanks to my insistence. There is a manual setting in in the Diagnostics Software where they can select up to 9 different settings of gas/air mixture. Let me know if you need more details, I even have a youtube video of the "rattle" up in case you want to compare.
