Ah, now I know what you are talking about. The upgrade from Classic speedometer and 4-button steering wheel to the Elegance/Avantgarde/AMG Pack speedometer and 12-button steering wheel.
If you have the Classic speedometer and the 4-button steering wheel in a pre facelift, it is no problem to upgrade to the "big" pre facelift and facelift speedo. Just the upgrade to 12-button steering wheel is required.

Hi minuszeit
I have a 4 button steering and analogue speedo and I want to change to digital. I have seen many 2nd hand digital speedo on eBay i was very tempted to buy but wasnt sure if It would work. Im willing to change the wheel to 12 button long as it is possible to install a 2nd hand speedo because the price of new one is too steep in UK
My car is a manual not automatic, is it possible to use any digital speedo or does the speedo need to come from a manual?

You have a 4-spoke wheel, so just replace the airbag. The airbag for 12-button wheel contains the control unit.

As I said before, if you buy a used one, the speedo is unable to assume the mile/km age, just ------- appears. To solve that problem it is necessary to ensolder and flash the Eprom. And that's the main problem. You have to find someone in your area who is able to do that.
That's why I said, a new speedo is the safe way.
The speedo get its information from central gateway. Manual or 5G/7G transmission doesn't matter.

I don't know at the moment how much speedometers in the US or UK are, but here in Germany a new one is about 1000 Euro / 1250 USD.
I'm in the lucky position to purchase new spares directly from MB with a lot of discount.

Thanks for response.
Just making sure I got this right, what you are saying is I need a 12 button steering wheel with a air bag, I wouldn't be able to use the airbag from my 4 button steering.
Yeah I have googled and found a company near by who repair speedos so am guessing they should be able to do it.

You got a pre facelift, right?
If so, you can leave your steering wheel itself, just replace the airbag unit. Your current airbag includes a unit control for 4 button operation and the airbag. The airbag for 12-button steering wheels includes the control unit for 12 button operatiom and the airbag. The 12 button airbag unit for 4-spoke wheel has spare no A204 860 0202.

Am thinking of getting 3 spoke steering, am guessing that should fine.

I don't know the exact circumstances in the US but the European 204 with automatic transmission and Sports Pack or Advanced Agility Pack (sports knob on center console under headunit) do all have paddles.
3-spoke wheel w/o paddles A204 460 3203, airbag A204 860 5502 for model year 2010

A172... is a facelift wheel Sports Pack. You want that?
You have to install a facelift column to make the lighting of the knobs work.
1803 is the wheel with red stitches as I see. That doesn't work in pre facelift 204. Wrong control unit for model year 2013.

A172 460 2703 with paddles, A172 460 2903 without paddles do work in pre facelift. Airbag A172 860 1602. Column depends on Sedan/Estate and current extras like memory seats and cruise control.
