Retrofitting 2011/2012 Speedo in a 2008 C Class
Is it possible to retrofit one of the new color screen speedometer into a 2008 C Class?
The new screen is really impressive and it would be nice to have one installed.

I'd assume you'd have to program it with STAR. Even if you program it, I'd assume some of the selections wouldn't work because more features have been added that are controlled from the instrument cluster for the face lift model. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in on the subject.

I asked the same questions little while ago and was informed you can but very costly plus you need a brand new speedo which hasn't been assigned to any vehicles yet, only way to get 1 is from MB the you need to program it in with STAR. Some1 here with more knowledge then me can give you more detailed info.

Thanks for the answer. I wanted to know how complicated it is to install the new screen in the dash, as it's easy to find one in a damaged car.
I don't really mind not having it, as the only things that I really want are the comand system, the Harman Kardon sound system, the new 3 spoke steering wheel and maybe a few other stuff that are easy to install.

I have been told you cant fit a speedo off a another car, it has too be a brand new item which hasn't been assigned to any vehicle so no point looking getting 1 off a damage car/salvages.
There are some videos or pics (cant remember which 1 it is) in this forum on changing instrumental cluster which includes taking speedo out.
Just search under instrumental cluster

The facelift speedometer fits perfect. You just have to replace the upper part of the facelift speedometers housing against the old one. That's all.
Encode the speedometer via SD in developer mode.
The safe way is to use a brand new speedometer. A new one will assume the mile/km age of the car. A used speedometer will not, just ------- appears. In this case you have to desolder the Eeprom and flash it. The same procedure if you want the AMG menu in non AMG speedometers. But this is something for experts in electronic.
If you use a new facelift speedometer and encode it via SD developer everything runs fine without any promlems.

Thank you.
I retrofitted the W212 headunit because of its bluetooth streaming ability and because of its ability to read and import the cells phone book via bluetooth.

That's what I figured why you upgraded, but you said NTG4 so I was confused. So you updated to NTG4.5 from w212. The A2DP is what I really liked on the NTG4.5. This might have to be my next mod. Was it just a straight swap? Did you have to swap the screen too?

It is a NTG4 headunit, you can see the PCMCIA slot. NTG4.5 has a SD card slot.
The bt streaming and phone book ability is a feature of one of the latest firmware updates.

Yes, you just have to shorten the faceplate.
Remove W204 headunit, install 212 headunit and thats it. It is really a simple thing.
Btw, it is also possible to upgrade to NTG4.5. I developed a converter so that one can maintain the W204 pre facelift display. Just one/two minor shortcomings have to be fixed.
Just went to my car to show you the bt streaming function of 212 NTG4.

Every MB dealer should be able to update firmwares. The updates are part af the Telematics DVDs the headquarter send to the official local MB dealers. It's not like that in the US resp. North America?
I will keep you informed relating NTG4.5

Unless it's a necessary update then I might be able to get my dealer to do it.
