When or If to Service Air-conditioning

My car is now over 5 years old .

The air conditioning is operating well except for an intermittent sonic whine when on low settings ie not working hard on a coolish day- been there for years

My question is :- Is it best to have a regas & oil change planned maintenance service or to leave well alone , don't rock the boat & save my hard earned.?

Found the answers on Google :-

"7. Have your air conditioning serviced regularly, even if there are no visible problems

Just as the other systems of your car need servicing on a regular basis, the same is true for the air conditioning system. The compressor needs oil, or else it will seize up. The filter collects debris and moisture. If the filter becomes blocked, then the performance of the system will deteriorate and it can even quit working entirely (probably when you need it most!)

Normally the refrigerant gas in a car air conditioning system has to be recharged completely within four years from the manufacture date and thereafter every two to three years.

An annual servicing of your cars air conditioning system will guard against malfunctions in the compressor and other vital parts of the system. Regular maintenance will save you money in the long run and guarantee you comfort in the hottest months."

My Porsche 944 will be thirty years in my garage come October and I have had the R-12 refrigerant topped up twice in that time. Never a malfunction in all that time although it is a manual system, of course.

Whenever I drive the car, I run the AC for at least five minutes (winter or summer) to lubricate the seals.

My C300, delivered in October 2007, has never had any AC problems and until it does I'm not messing with it.

There will come a time when the R-134a refrigerant will have leaked down some at which point it will be dealt with.

Just passed four years in November....no HVAC service on the C or E.

The oldest car in our family is a 2003 Mazda....no HVAC service and works perfectly.
