How often should we change air filters?

How often should we change air filters? Dealer under recommended services put air cleaner insert- 130 bucks. Is this talking about engine air filter or the cabin filter?

When they say "air cleaner element/insert" they typically mean engine air filter or filters as there are two of them actually. According to my 2008 maintenance booklet, it should be changed every 4 years or every 52,000 miles. However, starting with 2009 model year, they seem to have reduced it to 40,000 miles.

As for the cabin air filter, I have not been able to find any specifics other than this enigmatic text in the maintenace manual:

INTERIOR FILTERS (e.g. dust filter,
recirculating air filter, activated charcoal
filter or combination filter) are replaced
as called for by the Maintenance System.
What exactly does this mean? Is there going to be a warning message displayed in the instrument cluster telling me to change it??? In 3 years of ownership, I have not seen anything to that effect. The car was recently at the dealer and they said the cabin filter was dirty. I just bought a replacement and will be changing it myself. The car has 52K miles and I don't think it ever had the cabin filter replaced.
