2008 Honda Accord Coupe V6
Future owner with questions

Hi all. I currently own a 2008 Honda Accord Coupe V6, and will be looking to trade it for a used 2009-11 C class.

My question is regarding warranty. My accord was out of warranty (at 60k miles) when I bought it, but I paid $1800 for 3yrs up to 100k full comprehensive.

It seems everywhere I read people say to get a CPO Benz. So that covers 12 months 100k miles and is included? What would be the charge to extend that an additional 1-2yrs?

And if the car is not CPO can't I still get a comprehensive warranty for it like I did for my Accord?

There's a mass volume used mercedes dealer in Dallas that has prices and selection that is really hard to beat, so just checking my options.

About 3 weeks ago, I paid $2960 to extend my factory warranty to 7yr/75kmi. The warranty is pretty much bumper-to-bumper, with the exception of things like trim pieces and some wear-and-tear items (it's an MB warranty, not a third-party warranty). I bought my car while it was still under the factory warranty, but not CPO; the dealer was able to apply the extended warranty to my vehicle by doing a simple inspection. If you forego the 12mo/100k "free" CPO warranty and buy used (but not CPO), you could stand to save some $$$, just make sure your local dealer will be willing to apply an extended warranty (if you decide to purchase one).

Good luck! Make sure you drive both luxury and sport models -- the road-feel is very different.

Thanks for the reply and info! I'm pretty sure I prefer the sport ride, but ill drive the luxury just for comparison.

We also bought our C300 under warranty, but not CPO and not from a MB dealer. We've got 2 years and 20K left on the original warranty right now. When do you approach a MB dealer about this? When the original warranty is closer to expiring or earlier? Is there an advantage cash-wise to doing it earlier?

I found no advantage in doing it earlier. My factory warranty expires in August and I just bought mine; the extended warranty doesn't go into effect until then and is fully refundable before then and pro-rated-refundable after it goes into effect (until it expires). I'm not sure if this is just a California law thing, though, so check the fine print.

Mercedes offers "discounted" warranties about twice per year; my local dealer sends out fliers advertising a "warranty blowout" or something along those lines. I'm sure you could always call and ask your dealer when they go on sale. My warranty's MSRP was ~$3600, so the price I paid ($2960) was about 20% off retail.

One thing I forgot to mention is something that the warranty salesman told me about a non-CPO surcharge. Apparently, they are supposed to charge a 15% surcharge on the warranty if the car was not purchased CPO (my price above includes this). My guess is you could negotiate that out if you really tried. That said, when I was car shopping, I paid $27,000 for a vehicle that was selling for $32,500 elsewhere as CPO, so I'll gladly pay the extra 15% on the warranty.

If your dealer gives you the run-around about applying the warranty to non-CPO, let me know and I'll give you my dealer's name.

Thanks! We paid just under $24K for this car in the fall from a wholesale dealer here. We didn't set out to get a Benz, I thought we'd end up with a BMW or Lexus since a stick-shift was non-negotiable. And then we saw this listed under blue book and jumped on it, the dealer was having problems selling it for the same reason we wanted it (manual transmission). It seems pretty reliable from what I'm seeing on the board here, but I'm still learning and trying to think ahead.

Price now for 2 year/135K miles extension is 2295.00 Well worth it especially if you plan to keep the car for that long. Plus its a good thing to have for resale.

That is incorrect. CPO or not, you will be charged 15% surcharge if you wait till the end of the factory warranty before purchasing an extended warranty. Dealers will waive the 15% if purchased within 30 days of car purchase date. If your APR is real low you might as well add it to the loan
