What is this for? A Backup Camera?

I've been looking at some backup cameras lately and most of them seem to replace one of the license plate lights. But I noticed I have another area that I'm assuming is where a factory camera would go and I'm wondering if I'm right.

I've attached a picture so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone installed a camera in this location? Do I have the sizes wrong?

On my factory cam on my C250, it is not in this spot. It is further to the right, which makes no sense to me.

I have one to the right of my license plate as well, with different dimensions. It's confusing...but I'd rather mount it as close to the middle of the plate as possible, so this position would be best.

Has anyone used this location?

My after market camera is in here. I know the other spot closer to the center is better, probably less optical distortion. However, I want to stick to factory "standard". The other reason I remember vaguely is the factory spot is a little easier to access. As for the size, I drilled a hole in the spot center, filed it until the end size fit with the size of my camera. I used some not so strong glue (forgot what type, from Home Depot) inside and outside, around the camera. It holds very well. Glue is white so I need to drop a little bit black paint. Never bother to paint it over two years now.

I see no distortion (or no noticeable distortion) using the factory spot.

My eBay camera is $5, cheap but works nearly as well as the camera in 2013 GLK as a loaner. I compared both in the dark, GLK has slightly lower noise level if I look very closely.

The camera is alright on my car - it would be better if it had guidance lines though.

I have found that when it looks like you are right on top of something, you still have some room to go. I have yet to back into anything though - so I guess this is a feature
