2007 C-230 - CEL Crank/Cam alignment P0016, P0017
Check engine light came on couple of weeks ago. Since my service B was due, I took it to the MB dealer, who diagosed it to be camshast issue.. codes P0016 and P0017. ($200 for the diagnosis and quote). My car has 84K miles on it.. seems too low for parts to wear out. Dealer is offering a 10% discount whereas MB is washing there hands off completely.
Any suggestions?
labor labor to check with boriscope 340.00
labor to replace balance shaft 4760.00
all parts and 1031.00
fluids 100.00

You have suffered the dreaded balance shaft sprocket failure that some early M272 engines had. Designated by a P0016 & P0017 together. I'm afraid the engine must come out for repair. I would approach MBUSA for a goodwill co-payment.

Good luck!

Thanks for your prompt response.. I did speak with MBUSA and they are not really willing to go anything beyond what dealer provided. i.e. 10% discount.
I was wondering - has this been a common issue for MBs? Do any I another course of action?

Yes it was a common issue on early M272 engines. A bit hit & miss. One of their parts suppliers did not harden sintered sprockets properly.
Benz goodwill regarding the issue has been varied. On some cars, (mainly lower in mileage) they have paid up but their goodwill policy is erratic.
You can get ugly with them but then you might lose your 10% or they might pay more.

More run around - MB will follow up with the dealer to review what might have caused the issues..Online posts are flooded with this issue.. Looks like the repair bill is standard between $6K-6.5K
Does anyone know what happened with the class action.. seems like, one in NJ was dismissed.. Wasn't there one in CA? could not find much information on that..

MB refused to make any co-payment for the issue citing that it 2007 model, and even though the issue has been quite common, it is out side of the warranty.. Couple questions -
Is this something that shops other than dealerships can handle?
Is it even worth investing $6K in the car when it only worth 12-13K (at the most)
Does anyone know if there is a recall from MB? (Or is there a class action)
Appreciate the help from folks who have experienced it or know more that I do.

hello Glyn!
I'm afraid i have the same problem as mentioned on several posts.. fault codes P0016; P0017
I've ridden almost all posts about these issue and it's clear for me that i'm in trouble (as i have no any waranty and i'll have to pay for repairs) becouse of my impressive C230 V6 2.5L 2007. The thing is, I bought my car in USA on auction and it was delivered 2 weeks ago with CHECK ENGINE light on; yes, "i'm lucky" ..
by the way, i live in Batumi, Georgia, near Black Sea.
I found some information on russian pages also, they mention about the Part Number for Repair Kit(ful set) as well, please check if possible for you, or i'm getting comfused - http://www.drive2.ru/users/zark
As i was explained it's much better/cheaper to buy full set, than to buy separately, as the cost goes too high. Could you please advice where can i buy this kit with a cheapest price??
My car's VIN code: WDBRF52H17A931633
With best regards!
Miro

That is the correct kit. You can try european parts suppliers.
Benz spares are cheapest in the US but I cant find the kit listed by the common suppliers.
You could try this.
