How to get cable through bulkhead/firewall

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone can tell me an easy way to pass a thin cable from the drivers side of dashboard near the A pillar, such as behind steering wheel or pedals through the bulkhead/firewall to eventually connect into the engine compartment fuse box without removing too many panels or carpet.

Would have been handy if I had the internal fuse box but unfortunately not.

Not too sure about removing panel under steering wheel as it has the knee airbag there.

It's a C220 cdi W204 2010 r/h drive blue efficiency by the way.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I pulled a power cable from an opening behind the battery... just pulled up the carpet in that one spot, and voila... piece of cake.

Thanks Jason,

The car is not here at the moment and as we have only just acquired it I have not seen the battery but I thought it was under a cover on the passenger side.

If I am correct I would have to route the cable from the drivers A pillar, across behind the dash, then through where you say and back again across the engine compartment to the fuse box. I would rather avoid this complicated route.

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

All I am looking for is to take a cable with a jack plug on it from the dash near the drivers A pillar, to an ignition switched 12v supply. One of the favourites is the cigar lighter socket but it looks difficult to access the rear of it.

Any suggestions?

Jason is right.

1) remove the fuse cover
2) at the back you can see all the wire going into the cabin, there may be a piece of foam that you can remove temp
3) take a long stick and tape the cable to it (in a way where the cable itself doesnt get stuck as you push it through the firewall)
4) push it through and it will come out near your foot brake pedal
it helps if you remove the cover under the steering wheel. to tap power you can just by a "add a fuse" which allows you to piggyback. check the illuminating door sill for some guidance.

I tried going through the fuse box and spot under the battery. But they never panned out. I got mad and drilled a hole through the firewall . I have a few things tapped to my cigar lighter. Its not hard to take off.
1 pull the gear shifter leather up, you can unscrew the gear shifter.
2 pull up the chrome trim ( P R N D) and unclip the wires ( 2 sets)
3 pull up the wood/al / CF... trim start from the front and work back. Be careful not to crack or bend the trim. I did that the first time.
4 unscrew the cigar lighter two t20 screws, pull it out and up, and un clip the wires
for the cigar lighter their are 3 wires 2 thick and 1 thin. The brown wire should be neg, the other thick wire should be pos, and the thin wire is pos for the cigar lighter light do not use that one.
Sorry for my poor grammar and spelling.

Thanks for all your help. I managed to feed it through the bulkhead behind the fuse box in the end. It was easier than it looked.
Thanks again.

Don't have the details as my local tech did it;but he installed my Valentine Radar Detector 12V into the armrest lighter in about 15 min. Know that he removed the armrest.

It was a gps camera detector I was installing on the dash. The model is called an Indic8tor.

This one http://www.indic8tor.com/

She has had it a few years, I have one as well. There not bad, you can update them for a fee and also press a memo button if you pass a camera that's not in its memory.

No need to remove the armrest. I did the V1 install and got power from the lighter. Take out the shift boot, trim and ashtray assembly. Then feed the wire from under the dash. Bumped into things for a few minutes but finally found a passageway. Fused the wire behind the panel at the end of the dash and ran it up to the roof pillar trim. If you know what you are doing it would only take 15 minutes.

Good luck.
