My Command Nav alternative (pics & videos)
Here's a quick rundown of what I did:
- Buy a Nexus 7 dock, take it apart and remove the circuit boards.
- Remove A/C vents in car and then the head unit
- Measure out where you want the pogo pins to lie and use a dremel to make the hole. Peel out the rubber mat and remove the goo before you start cutting.
- Screw the pogo pin circuit board into the bottom of the head unit.
- Pull down the glove compartment to drill a hole in it so you can run the power cable and audio cable to the 12v power and aux port. Grommet the hole makes it more stock looking.
- Plug everything in and put everything back together.
Videos of it in action
Here's my list of hardware:
- Google Nexus 7 2012
- Google Nexus dock
- Miccus Mini-jack RX: Bluetooth Music Receiver - could have just used the 3.5mm jack on the dock but it was too flaky. Didn't always play out the car speakers so I decided to stay with the BT setup.
- Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot 890L - Internet
- Kensington Noise Reducing Car Audio AUX Cable - completely fixed the engine whine coming through the speakers
- Satechi BT MediaRemote - I forgot to show this. I use it for media control (play, pause, previous, advance).
- Anker 24W Dual-Port Rapid USB Car Charger
Notable Apps:
- Google Play - Music
- Waze - Navigation - Love it for the live traffic and police alerts
- Tasker - Allows you to automatically launch & kill apps & more depending on different variables such as power, location, wifi connectivity, bluetooth connectivity, etc... Very powerful app!
- Audio Glow - Music Visuals - Don't use this all time. Just pretty cool
- Tablet Talk: SMS & Texting App - This is the app I couldn't remember. It allows my incoming texts on my phone or an incoming phone call to be displayed on the Nexus 7 when they come in. Never need to pull my phone out.
So I've been at this for quite a while and have been through lots of devices. This has been the best yet. I know it's a crude list so if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
I'm having a rough time finding something similar. Are you referring to something spring loaded like this? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Lin...6014/100123811
.
They are white but you'll notice in the video that I made an effort to paint them black. Never tried to repaint them.
The only thing is I wish I could do something with the AUX cord going from it to the glovebox :/
