If I remember correctly you used a 10mm long socket from inside the trunk

As I recall, you access the light unit from the trunk. No tools needed. Just slip the carpet piece in the corner left to reveal the unit and unscrew some plastic nuts. The unit with the bulbs will come right out. On the right side, you access the unit through the carpet covered bin on the right, on the fender side of the trunk. Use a flashlight and it should be intuitive.

By taking the light "unit" out - the part with all the bulbs inserted - you have complete access to the inside of the lens. If you want to take the lens off, it's probably attached from the inside and you have to take out the light unit anyway as I described above.

the light unit is currently on my desk so no worries about that.
i want access to the full inside surface side. currently i can only poke inside with a finger via one of the bulb wholes.
i guess the thin front layer is glued to the rest of the unit :/

It makes sense that it would be glued together. You would know if you have in front of you. If you have to replace it, I don't believe it's very expensive. I think I saw a pair for the 2008 on Amazon for $150 or so. Good luck.
