110k miles and alternator

hi i have a c200 manual, diesel with 110k on the clock with full dealer service history, my car started to make a crakling noise from the engine bay everytime i start it from cold, when i check under the hood its coming from near where the main belt is, i got it booked in with the dealers for them to tell me that the alternator is making this noise.

the noise goes away within a few minutes, i have no problem with the regards to the drive of the car, no warning lights.

what do you guys think, 110k is that all the alternator can take?

delaers want £700 to repair this, what are you thoughts?

Do these engines have alternator overrun pulley? I am not sure how the alt itself can make noises... It's probably the belt slipping due to one of the pulleys acting up would be my guess.
