Tranny Slam RO Attached

Guys, 2011 C300 was shifting hard on the 4/3 downshift (slam) and shifting hard on the 4/5 upshift at highway speed. This was a regular event and was easily reproduced for the shop foreman during a ride-along.

I was shocked when the SA called and said they fixed it with software only. I thought for sure there would be some damage.

55k miles now and no real issues other than this--did experience the hard shift and slip on the 1/2 upshift a year or so ago, but that was fixed with an adaptation/software upgrade as well.

Since the pan was not dropped, I'm concerned that there could be evidence of wear (metal flakes) that may cause damage later.

Do you think this is just a push back to avoid the expense of a replacement (mother ship cost control)? I have about 10 months of CPO left, thankfully. I did have the tranny service at 40k with TC drain at the dealer--had to go through hoops, but they did it.

I must admit that for now, the tranny shifts like butter and no issues at this moment.

Why did you have to "go through hoops"?

The dealer, as many do, insisted that there was no way to drain the torque converter. They finally agreed to look for the drain plug and did the job properly.

When I questioned the service writer at the dealership where I purchased my car, he told me they do the change by vacuuming it out through the dipstick tube, they don't drop the pan at all. I then asked if this method empties the torque convertor and he said yes! About $600. I left.

I used to work with Volvo in which we had to deal with the **** GM 4T65 trans used in the T6 model P2's. The TCM software upgrades in many cases did correct the shifting issues, however, I would say the majority of that was the fact that it reset the learning process for the gearbox.

Which if I am not mistaken we have the ability to do that ourselves. As far as damage, that would be hard to prove unless there were fault codes, and/or by some chance excessive material was found in your oil, which unfortunately is probably unlikely.

Just my thoughts.

Personally, I think you are misinformed.. We suck out the engine oil from the dipstick, but cannot suck out the trans fluid from the dipstick. Also, with a trans service, you replace the filter. To replace the filter you absolutely must drop the pan. If you have a 7spd (722.9 trans) you can only fill it through the drain plug. FYI, our trans service is $335 out the door.

xjmoe83 I am either mis-informed or confused, or both. I'm sure I asked the dealer specifically about the torque convertor, but there must be a misunderstanding somewhere. To further my confusion I have seen quick lube places advertise trans service with the vac method. Anyway, is the $300 price you mentioned from a dealer or indy shop? Thanks.

that's a reasonable price. I saw a "special" about 6 months ago at another dealer here in northern N.J. for $450
