Question Oil Question

Hey Guys, Sorry for the newb question but I couldn't really find a definitive answer when searching and I don't have the owners manual with me right now.

1) What is the recommended engine oil to use for our cars?

2) I noticed my mechanic used a 5w30 synthetic oil on my most recent oil change....this didn't seem right to me? Could this cause any issues if it is wrong?

Depends where you are. The warmer the climate the thicker the oil an vice versa. Most places use a 5w40. I use Mobil 1 5w40 m formula right from the dealer. I work at a dealer and it's 5.85 a quart for me so IMO no reason to look for anything else.

Looks like others have answered, but yes 5w30 or 0w40 is also fine , I believe about 8 quarts.

The oil you use should meet MB-spec 229.5 (IIRC). It will say it right on the container. For Mobil 1 it is 0w-40. Other weights of the oil do not meet 229.5. It's not just the viscosity, but also the additives. I usually get 5qt jugs at Wal-Mart for $27 or less. For that price there is no reason to use anything else. My car is RWD and takes 9 qts. I think the 4Matics take a little less.

5w-30 seems to be the one-size-fits-all oil that a lot of shops use. Recently there was a news story in my area about the quality of oil changes at repair shops. Something like 6 out of 7 oil samples did not meet industry standards and some were even considered harmful.

The last time I had a shop do an oil change, I provided my own genuine MB oil filter and oil. They managed to spill the old and new oil everywhere. It took me more time to clean up the mess than it would have taken to do it correctly myself, so I'm back to doing my own oil changes.

I was also going to give them the oil and filter but I have no way of verifying for myself if they actually used the oil so I said forget it...Next time I will be doing my own oil change for sure! Thanks for the info!

Mercedes engine oil specifications 229.5 (link below) lists lots of approved oils from different manufacturers. You can be pretty safe using any of those listed at recommended intervals considering how you drive and climate.

This. I've noted many owners using other weights of Mobil1 - but if your dealer is sharp, they can deny an (engine) warranty claim based on use of a non-approved oil.

A link for the 229.5 spec oil list

You'll see that Mobil 1 5w30 isn't present in the list. Other viscosity oils are, but 5w30 isn't for Mobil 1 specifically.

My car had Mobil 1 5w30 in it from the dealer (non-MB) I bought my car from; guess they didn't know better. Swapped it out immediately for Mobil 1 0w40 and have been running that since.

edit: oops, didn't see Rander's post.

Equally important as your oil is making sure you're using the MB OEM filter or one made out of fleece. That along with the 229.5 approved oil will ensure you're covered for the MB extended oil changes (1 year / 20k KM). If the filter isn't made of fleece, you must change the oil on a more regular basis. For the amount of oil required to fill it up, it's worth the few extra bucks getting the right filter.
