So I got under the car for first time transmission oil change following the directions on this forum and the diy directions. Took off the engine/tranny cover and see that the back of my pan is wet with oil. Anybody had this issue? Is it normal to leak a little? Also I want to clean up the area to the back of the car next to the pan that is underneath the matte black thing going across the back of the pan.. Can I take this black thing off? What is it? It's held together by 8 bolts, 4 on each side. See pics. Any help appreciated as I am under the car right now. Thanks
By the way this is 2010 4Matic flex fuel

Some ATM have an electro/hydraulic bush whose O rings fail & leak. They are inexpensive to replace .

If I could avoid it I would not remove the crossmember .

Interested to know how you go.

When I got to installing the new filter, it kind of hangs down on the back side..is this normal? I made sure it went into the transmission with the o-ring but it's sloping down on the other side that has no support...The old filter hung like this too when I took off the pan. Is this normal? Here is the pic... Help needed! Changing transmission oil-image-2552375336.jpg

I have a 5 speed & the filter is smaller but the pan when it is installed in place will support the filter.

Make sure the O ring is in place , that there is no dirt on the filter base from the exhaust pipe & the gasket faces are wiped clean with a non lint cloth.

Cleanliness is essential.

Thanks. So it's fine sloping down so much? The pan will push it up, is that the idea? Seems like a flimsy way to do it.
And the small seeping of oil seemed like it was coming from the back of the pan looked like the pan seal might've been letting some oil through. I wiped it as dry as I could let's see if it will be dry after new seal is in place.

Anybody else have input on the new filter sagging when you install it in the transmission? See pic above...

I secured the pan over the filter and hopefully it will raise it up and even it out with the side that has the o-ring. And hopefully it will keep contact and not let dirt through the o-ring seal. That's the only thing I'm worried about.
I should add that the filter I got from RMEuropean was not the OEM one but Elring Klinger brand. I'm assuming this is why it wasn't a snug fit.

Drove down the street.. although haven't gone past 3rd gear yet..Quiet shifting, no banging or knocking. Will give it a go on the highway tomorrow.

Anybody have anything go wrong after they did the fluid change before? What should I look for?
Or does it just take time for things to go wrong?

Did it per overflow method, capped it when the flow started spurting. Got 9L out, put in 10, got 1 liter back from overflow. So 9 out, 9 in.
